Pretty heavy stuff to read about for people not used to living in a country in a continual, violent war. And the worst part is that it's nowhere near over. The kidnappings, assasinations and live dismemberments continue to this day. The difference between the time when these stories ocurred and now is that the guerrillas are moving in more limited areas, focused more on drug cultivation, and the paras have changed their names and formed new groups (Aguilas Negras, etc), doing business as usual, with new leaders.

This kind of violence doesn't end with truces. There is too much money at stake. It will only end with serious education compaigns to instill stronger values and compassion into children, before they get recruited into these groups.

The other day, the military was chasing down a group in Southern Colombia, and ran into a group of 25 young Colombians heading south from Antioquia. They told the military they were hired to work down there for very good money. The military told them to turn around and head home or they risked losing their lives in risky, violent work.
