They were there thru all my different stages in life, visiting me during my 3 year vacation in a state resort, upstate NY and my kids still call them uncle Nick and Eddy.

Like the original poster , I am also a Colombian that has just returned to this Country after 40 years and although an older guy still very much interested in the gay life and in what its community has to offer in this Country

Getting back to the original thread and away from my previous vulgar posting, I apologize, sometimes I think I’m actually sitting drinking beer in some corner bar in el Barrio Abajo, Barranquilla and get carried away, once again please accept my apology.
I must report that I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Barranquilla has a “defile gay� as part of the pre-carnaval celebration and is well received by all barranquilleros, given the notorious macho, corroncho fame thrust on us. My beloved adopted (originally from la guajira) Barranquilla has moved into the 21st century by embracing and accepting and enjoying all kinds of weird modefoques. We now also have “el defile de coyas� (hookers) there you see all kinds from the 250 peso a day hooker to the 100 mil barras an hour. I would love to see in the near future man/ burra couples proudly parading down la calle Murillo. I have to thank NYC for my very tolerant upbringing, this is gotta be the most diverse city in the planet. Only in NYC baby!

Si en Colombia todo esta cambiando, miren el exito de la novela donde sale un marica. Y hasta tiene pretendientes. Cuando estuve en Bogota quede tambien sorprendida por que los gays van por la calle agarrados de mano y hay muchos tipos que uno no sabe si era hombre o.....y en Barranquilla el carnaval se lo gozan todos los maricas con las mascaras y un tipo que trabaja conmigo dijo"que piernas tan lindas las de esos gays , estan mejores que la de todas ustedes" desde ese momento todo el mundo se la monto y le dicen que si ya tiene el disfraz listo para los carnavales......y El se rie, como que le quedo gustando la varieedad

Well... I wouldn't say it's accepted. A recent poll in El Espectador wasn't all that positive about gays. What I have noticed lately in El Tiempo is that there's more positive news about gay establishments (El Theatron), because of good atmosphere, good music, etc.
However, like the gay in a soap (can't remember the name), it's concentrated around stereotypes... because that's safe and noticeable. It's clear and therefor not a threat for the macho heterosexual. On August 7th in Bogotá (Carnaval de Bogota) at the very end there were some gays (dressed as women) in the parade.
On a finale note, I didn't see any gays walking hand in hand on the street while I was there and I wouldn't recommend it either.

Gays One of my best friends is gay and I can say I am astonished to see how open (at least in Bogota, Medellin and Cali) things seem to be. My friend has lived with his boyfriend for some years now and they mingle among a bunch of us every weekend. We are several couples that get together quite often and that includes two gay couples. I have been to Theatron and although not my cup of tea (too much boom, boom, boom electronic music) you see all kinds of people. From the typical stereotypical to the non stereotypical. In TV gays have been around for quite some time, and also in all kinds of fashion from the stereotypical hairdresser, to the married bisexual, to the regular down the street guy or like the famous Laisa in Los Reyes now on TV who is a transvesti who plays as such in the show and has become one of the most popular characters in Colombia today. I had thought myself as a very open minded person, but since I have been very close to this friend I have found in general a lot of people tend to be. My friend actually told me his biggest problem had not been with his family in Colombia but with his family who live in Texas and Tennesee.
