I am planning a trip from Bogota to the "Eje Cafetero" for the Coffee Festival (Reynado del Cafe - end of June) with an American male friend and a Colombian female friend (she is coming to Colombia for the first time in 30 years!!). My family in Bogota travels all around (Bogota-Cali, Bogota-Medellin, Bogota-Bucaramanga) by car without a problem. I want to know if I would rent a car, rent a farm (Casa de Recreo con picina) near Pereira, Armenia, or Manizales for a base, and go from there to Cali and/or Medellin during day time and party a lot is "Dar Papaya" for kidnapping (neither of us have a lot of money - middle class Colombo-Americans). I know all about the "Paseo Millonario" and common crime. I am more worried about the safety of all of us. I want to support turism in Colombia but not at our lives' expense – cannot wait for some fritanga at road-side restaurants….
Also, if anyone in the group have tips of any kind for this trip, it would mean a lot to the three of us (we love Colombia immensely!). Thanks.

litost says on Nov 15, 2006, 09:47: Great idea, but do bear in mind that Cali and Medellin are several hours away from most places in the coffee region (between 3-5 hours depending where you are exactly) so I suggest you focus on visiting the sites in the region. More than enough to keep you busy and entertained for weeks!

I am used to drive long trips, and up to 8 hours is just fine - we may stop by Rio Sucio on the way to Cali for what I believe they call la fiesta del diablo - mucha maizena and aguardientico....I think I need to ask my passengers if their a*ses are up to it. Gracias.

EMAN says on Nov 16, 2006, 16:28: There are so many nice fincas in Eje Cafetero When I went to Eje Cafetero, it was only my girlfriend and I, so we stayed at a finca that had 7 other rooms. Since this was my first finca experience, it was great for me as they served a traditional Colombian breakfast and dinner. The people at this finca were very nice and helpful but if I was with two other people who were paying, I would go your route and rent a total finca. Since you will be renting a total finca and have a car, you will have many options. You may want to look at these options as well as they offer some very nice fincas for rent:

EMAN says on Nov 17, 2006, 13:10: Day trips to different areas of Eje Cafetero!! Santa Rosa De Cabal and the amazing termales are a great day trip. Santa Rosa De Cabal is a wonderful town in Eje Cafetero with a beautiful park and church. Don't miss eating chorizos as these are the specialty of Santa Rosa De Cabal.
