I wonder if the US is sufficiently worried to launch an, ahem, "preemptive" strike?

Wow they really worry a lot in the US. Believe it or not at one point hardware stores ran out of duck-tape in the US because so many people were using it to seal doors and windows in the event of a WMD attack from Iraq :)

Robert Jorge says on May 17, 2008, 23:05:

I never heard of duct tape being hard to get - especially because of fear of chemical attack.

And I doubt anybody "in the know" in the US is worried about Chavez buying Russian made weapons. The Dragunov as a sniper rifle is a piece of crap. If Chavez wanted real sniper rifles, there are a lot better choices than Dragunovs. A WWII vintage German Mauser is more accurate. And all the planes and such that he is buying would be one day of target practice for the US.

Colombia should be concerned, and has every right to be. These punk weapons could very easily find their way into the hands of people who shouldn't have them ... FARC, narcos, paras, and common street thugs in Colombia. Where there is a demand, there is a supply.

See the below link, the US government warned Americans to stock up on duct tape to save themselves from the rath of the terrorists :)

"Having raised its nationwide terrorist alert level, the main advice given by the Bush administration to Americans has been to stock up on bottled water, batteries and duct tape to deal with an attack."

Vlad, in the few days after 9/11 many things were said and feared. However, I know of not one store of any kind that ran out of duct tape. And we did worry a lot after 4 planes were hijacked and driven into buildings slaughtering thousands.

Call us human. And thanks for your sensitivity.

It was the Anthrax and 911 deal. The Gov. and private marketers were selling survival. I remember my mother calling me and asking whether she should go out and purchase the plastic, for windows and vents and the duct tape.

Selling fear is good marketing.

ANY duct tape shortage here would signal the end of civilization.

i've used it on boats, race cars, windows (don't believe those idiots in the media who claim it's useless in hurricanes!), gardening, miscellaneous home repairs (yes, even including duct repair!), and my personal favorite - "'babysitter/control device" for uproariously drunk acquaintance.

Before you throw me out, make sure I pay my bar tab

A $500 billion defense budget. More than the entire world combined And they "worry" about "security" :)

I'd be more worried about the level of math and science knowledge in the US than Venezuela (who's defense budget is probably less than what the US spends a month in Iraq), because the competition is heating up from rapidly industrializing nations.
