As a popular form of music Colombia's "vallenato" has achieved status as the country's favorite. What is your opinion of this genre of music? What are your favorite artists? Why do you think it has become so popular?

ColombianoX says on Jan 21, 2005, 19:34: What do I think? That's it's awesome, of course. Vallenato is great to listen to if you just want to drink and don't really want to dance. ColombianoX 'Defensor de la Colombianidad' 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

bitt3rvanilla says on Jan 21, 2005, 20:07: disagree Vallenato is not my thing. Its boring and it makes you want to get drunk, it only becomes acceptable while under the influence. Sorry guys, no offence but nothing beats salsa.

goosekirk says on Jan 21, 2005, 21:29: Vallenato's cool... But papayera's the coolest. Kind of like a dixieland band whose members are all on entirely different drugs.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jan 22, 2005, 08:17: cumbia! is the Colombian music of my preference too. I like to listen to Vives when driving long distances, especially his older cds like Un canto a la vida and Tierra del olvido. Cumbia, however, is much more elegant than either salsa or vallenato. Cerealkiller says on Jan 22, 2005, 11:21: Vallenatos often remind me of dusty places under the blazing sun around the Magdalena river, where the only thing you can get other than street arepas and the smell of brake liquid emmanating from old trucks is a couple of aguilas hahaha, that is definitely an experience, everybody should do that just for kicks, its brilliant! Im not saying I dont like it, its just a little strange, Carlos Vives is alright though, but thats not real vallenato now is it? In order to decide whether i like it or not I think I should probably spend a week in valleduper. Gomezman5 says on Jan 22, 2005, 11:44: Vallenatos----well.... It's not my favoirite in terms of rhythm or instrumentals, but the stories can be kind of interesting. The messages, and often social commentary in combination with the instrument/melody makes it nice to listen to when I am in the mood.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jan 22, 2005, 13:19: yes, the best part of the vallenatos is the lyrics. It's a whole cosmos of chismografía of small towns and hamlets in northern Colombia. I don't care much for the music or rythm or dancing style of vallenatos, but I just love to listen all these small-town stories fitted in the songs. It's like the soul of the people who live in that area of Colombia which I have never visited. "I have opinions of my own, strong opinions, but I don't always agree with them."-President George W. kikiortiz11 says on Jan 22, 2005, 14:15: Acordeon It is also the Acordeon that makes Vallenato. If you ever get a chance to witness a festival de Vallenato or festival cuna de acordeones, its unbelievable. It gives me chills ! There are people that play the acordeon unbelievably and make it look soo easy. its not! I try once and a while! lol But alltogether Vallenato is the best! Que Viva El Vallenato!!!!!!! Miguel says on Jan 22, 2005, 17:41: Vallenato Carlos Vives calls it the "Zydeco" of Colombia...like the cajun music from Louisiana here in the states; lyrically it is like reading the newspaper...as far as dancing it, my gringo ass thinks it is akin to bachata (mas o menos). Diomedes is awesome...and out of jail now!

kernow62 says on Jan 22, 2005, 21:29: oldgringo, I saw that film "The Devil's Accordion" excellent. What an honour to meet Pacha Rada. Fascinating film, I liked tha part where the two guys were dueling with their accordions, and how the factory in Germany couldn't believe the accordion could be played so blindingly fast.
