Now, that would be a great pbh meet-up. (Only if we can get Colombia_Mike to surface again...jejee). Is there a website for that?

I'm with ya, there Man T..... when I die, please play the vallenatos...at the celebration for ever and I'll go peacefully. :)

I'm forever indebted to a good friend from PBH, who made me a CD of nothing but vallenato music....before I knew what it was, and when it's hiding in my CD case, and someone mentions it, I have to go play it. Like right now!

Thanks.

Where do we go from here?

Once when I was in Colombia I got una serenata de vallenato and then the band stayed and we danced all night but it was vallenato movido, that type is the happy type, maybe that's the one you are talking about.

Maybe you could have the one that says "Los caminos de la vida ...." that one is quite sad.

that's probably why we'll never have a colombian meet-up on Valledupar; they would see a group of crazy gringos/gringas coming, we'd be sticking out worse than a sore thumb, and they'd get us all with one net (not the internet). We all have to go, one or two at a time, and then.... converge.

BTW, all the ladies/girls in Colombia are not crazy about Diomedes Diaz. I was asking my gf about him, but all I could remember was the last name. She was drawing a blank. She did, however drag me into some dark hole in Zona Rosa, where they were playing some hot Cuban music, where I recreated break-dancing all over again. She said she wasn't crazy about dancing and she really isn't the big partyin' type, but.....DAMN! WHAT LATINA OR COLOMBIANITA CAN KEEP STILL ONCE THE MUSIC STARTS??? :)

Where do we go from here?

0 funny, 0 helpful.

Man Tequila says on Jul 1, 2007, 14:34:

Lots of Colombians prefer other musicians to Diomedes, but very few Colombians like to hear foreigners make fun of their traditions and icons even wen they are not crazy for them themselves.

I'm having trouble picturing doing "the worm" to Cuban son, goin_south... you sure this didn't have an affect on her desire to dance? ;)

Thank you for your kind words, Monpirri. I give you credit for introducing me to a great variety of Colombian music through the video section. I bought a fair bit of further music based on your introduction my last visit to Colombia. I would love to go to Valledupar and see a Vallenato Festival, and hope to do so someday.

Going South - that must be an accent of sorts! But hey good for her travelling about and the fact that she can speak english is good even if she does have a funky accent, I like the way you say "colombianita" that's nice.
I'm not that crazy about Diomedes myself, but I do love some of his songs, there are alot of Colombians that don't like vallenatos and call them "vallejartos".
Cool that you can break-dance! I bet you had an audience.....

Miguel - yes I think I laughed as I found the expression funny - pasty gringos! We'll just have to wait and see if he decides to grace us with his presence...

I think I already wrote this but I think it bears repeating, because it's the way the world's going: This lady was Colombianita (who's english was every bit as good as mine, or better) with that blend of Aussie and french accent on her english, ... her husband whom she met in Australia, was from France and they lived in Tokyo. Her accent was very cool. You would never have known this young lady was from Colombia, had she been bording a plane somewhere else.

Some Colombians do not like vallenato (particularly some young urban folks -- I guess teenagers everywhere sometimes dislike things their parents enjoyed, although this is far less true in Colombia than elsewhere). I think I have heard the terms peyenato and bagreñato (sic) too? I love the vallenato lyrics and wish my Spanish was better -- some I can understand in full, some I can only pick up a few sentences.

I was introduced to vallenato music few years ago when I friend of mine from Manizales gave me three CD's from his music collection and every since then vallenato has been part of my musical interest.
