Remember this as your buying roses for the over-commercialized Valentines day. LET HEAR IT FOR DOLE FOODS!
What is great about our country is that there are smart people who provide better alternatives. This year think about the young Colombianas who are getting exposed to toxic chemicals, getting paid the minimum, and instead go Organic.

cali373 says on Feb 12, 2007, 08:32: LET'S HEAR IT FOR DOLE FOODS, The Colombian government (Uribe included), the Colombian grower's association for allowing this to happen. Thank you for reminding me Smile if you are a thinker! |

cali373 says on Feb 12, 2007, 09:09: Something to consider about chinese products is that they take a really long time to ship to the US and China is a lot farther away. Chinese Flowers may not be suitable for the US market unless they are flown here, which has high transportation costs compared to shipping. Is chinese labor that low that they can fly products here? I really don't know. Smile if you are a thinker! |

podborski says on Feb 12, 2007, 13:25: once again cali why don't YOU sell flowers without the chemicals, processed in worker friendly environments? What are YOU doing about it other than complain?

Aji1 says on Feb 13, 2007, 12:27: Ecomonics 101 If organic anything is to ever be adopted in any industry it has to meet the same quality and cost effectiveness measures as the non-organic alternative, period. The China comment is getting at the cost effectiveness issue. The two advantages Colombia has over China is location relative to the U.S. and the European (lesser degree) markets. Secondly, since Colombia is equatorial, the energy input requirements are easier to manage in growing a profitable, marketable product. Dutch companies are already investing in production in Africa to supply the European market as a closer less expensive alternative to South America... so there you go.

David Pristupa says on Feb 13, 2007, 22:15: Shipping Distance Although cheaper the distance to China is much greater. The shelf life would be really pressed if imported to North America.

poco says on Feb 16, 2007, 22:47: Chemicals ? In Colombia ? You don't suppose they use CHEMICALS on GRASS ? The same grass those grass fed cows eat. You don't suppose the application is MORE than the manafacturer recommends ? How many inspectors are monitoring the use of insectcides, you know, things like concentrations, proper application, proper clothing etc. ? David Pristupa says on Feb 19, 2007, 01:32: Outsourcing I find the idea of outsourcing the Flower industry to CHINA disturbing. Is North America so short of cash that it has to go China for its Roses and Carnations. Is Ecuador and Colombia now too expensive?

miamimike says on Feb 19, 2007, 02:18: Only a Matter of Time Before China Starts Flooding The US and Canadian Market with their roses. I read where they(china) are diligently working on developing a genetic strain of a Rose that remains fresh a few days longer and also in developing an advanced Storage system to maintain the flowers for the long trip. Get ready, "they is a coming". They will kill the Ecuador/Colombia Cut flower market as they are now decimating Colombia's once booming Textile/Garment/shoe industry. How can Colombia(or any other country that floats their currency for that matter) compete fairly against the Chinese who have their Currency frozen at an unrealistic low rate???? That is truly the Root of the problem! World leaders should stand up to China and tell them if they don't unlock their Currency and truly float it then we impose a Tariff on their exports when they hit our shores! Its only fair Trade! It amazes me Bush hasn't strongarmed them(chinese) into doing this here in the USA or face losing the lucrative US Open Markets,,, "Wait a minute. What did you just say? You're predicting $4-a-gallon gas? ... That's interesting. I hadn't heard that." -- Feb. 28, 2008 --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., |
