Vaccinations, anyone?

Hey, guys - does anyone know if certain vaccinations must be made prior to coming to Colombia? Or does it depend on which part of the country you are going to? Maybe, specifically for kids?

What's your experience? Thanks.

the u.s. state dept has a newsletter and... this can be had from them on line. to the colombian embassy will have special vac. notices.

other than that, just have your family doctor keep your yellow vac/shot record up to date. you might want to add tetanus and yellow fever for good luck. i don't remember them being required, but they sure are handy if needed.

good luck

Depending upon the area... like Departmentos de Amazonas, Choco, Cordoba, Guiania, Guaviare, Putumayo, Meta, Caqueta and Vichada a Yellow Fever vac. might be advisable. Any area over say 1200 mtrs ought to be safe. The only other one might be Hepatitis. Use caution in drinkg tap water ouside of major cities.

Visit your GP before travelling and they will advise you of the necessary vaccinations. It is better to get them all regardless of where you are going so as not to limit where you can go whilst there.

It is better to have the vaccination and not need it that to not have it at all!.....

No vaccinations for me, I drink the water everywhere and I eat everything. I'm just an animal.

I haven't needed any vaccinations either, except an obligatory yellow fever inocculation half a lifetime ago before my first trip to Colombia. Nobody even looked at that.
I'd consider malaria prophylaxis if I was going to stay in any low-elevation town like B/ventura (gods forbid).

Wow, Tony, getting close to fatherhood another time! You're right, that's what riding bareback will do. My wife had two miscarriages this past year and finally conceded that she's too old for more children. So we're trying to be a little more careful.

Ok - so I'm reading this with some interest - I go tommorow to get my shots - I plan to spend less than a week in and around Leticia (inc. Tabatangita). I know yellow fever is essential and here are the others that might come in useful.

1) Yellow fever
2) Hep A
3) Typhoid
