I'm importing more products from outside Colombia rather than lose purchasing power within Colombia.

Colombian exports are going to suffer due to the strong Peso now.

I just stay my full 60 days allowed instead of flying to Colombia once a month for a week. That saves a bunch on airfare and helps negate the shitee exchange rate. I won't invest in Colombia until I am here full time for at least a couple of years and understand and learn the culture and system of doing business first hand.

You have to take the good with the bad. I have invested in Colombia and will continue to do so. The same situation took place in the USA last year, where my investments lost 40% of the value. Life goes on...

as the dollar goes down in value current investment in pesos are worth more dollars. My apartment in Bogota is worth 20% more in dollars at the same peso price that i paid for 7 months ago. same goes for stocks, bonds or for the value of any business with cash flow in pesos.

I guess that sucks for all the people that bought when the peso was close to 3.000 and now want to sell...

Where's the dude that kept confidently insisting a few months ago that the peso would be at 3,000 by year's end? Looks like it ain't happening... wonder if he'll show his face in this thread.

Actually, if you bought pesos a while back and want to cash out into dollars now, things are looking good for you. I bought a place in Bogotá a few months ago with pesos bought at an average of 2275. If I cashed out today, just like Stockbroker, I'd realize a theoretical appreciation of about 20% just on the exchange rate fluctuation.

But I think its going lower before it comes back up. (It will come back up, though.)

Of course, if inflation then takes off in the US, people that cash out might be wishing they still had pesos.

those people made a killing. they made about 80% in currency apreciation alone. the dollar reached that level back in 2001-02 property values in colombia have doubled even tripled in that time, plus a nice 80% in the currency. someone who invested in that time and is cashing out today to buy dollars made a mint.

I'm sure it will come back. As long as it is around 2k next June, I'll be fine for my three month trip on $90-100/day spending money(after plane tickets/lodging). Before anyone says anything, my take-home pay is not very much, only around $3k/month after taxes and medical coverage. It is just that I have a lot of vacation time saved up and I live very much within my means.

Instead of whining about the dollar going down, how about doing something about it? Besiege your congressman and senators with threats that you're going to castrate the lot of them if they don't do something about this. Once that fails, lead an angry mob to their local offices and lynch everyone there.

2012 is when the world ends and the revolution begins!

The powers that control the US government (Goldman Sachs and the Bilderberg Group) will never let someone like Ron Paul become president. He would restore the republic and threaten their control. It doesn't matter anyway - in 2012 they're ALL going down.
