Here is a little more info... http://www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs/10137.html

The US Embassy Bogotá has a benefits officer who assists individuals who wish to receive SS benefit checks in Colombia. Takes three/four months to set up.

Call Citibank, international banking, in New York City. You may be able to open an account and have direct deposit.

that's what a friend told me... just like GIB, i can have it deposited here and withdraw there. unfortunately, if they know i'm living there, they will remove the SSI portion of my SS. so, the wise man knows how to keep secret things secret.

ATM CARD arthur brode, first time I have heard of an ATM card so restrictive. Perhaps you need a different bank.

marios tag has to do with dingleberries - it's a famous quote that he has shortened. Here it is in its entirety:

"The angle of the dangle of the dingle is directly proportionate to the swerve of the curve of the turd. But if you jiggle and wiggle the plurp is directly proportionate to the plop, judging by the splash on you ass" - Pat McKlingon

Honestly, whenever I read it I think of shit - probably because I have shit for brains

tomtom33 Whats a rentista?

What constitutes proof of $2000K/Mo income and does that income need to be "cashed" or deposited in a Colombian bank?

If one shows pay stubs going back a year is that good enough or do they want a W2?

Also the US $24,000 in negotiable securities - does this need to be on deposit with a Colombian bank or can I show, say, a Morgan Stanley account statement?

Thanks in advance as I'm not sure I want to do the Student Visa thing.

A Rentista... visa is issued to an individual who has a MONTHLY in come of at least 15 time the annual minimum wage in Colombia. For proof the original of the certification for funds issued by the official entity, bank, financial enterprise, social security institution, insurance company or any other private company, recognized by the US government that pays or rotates the income that will verify the original outside monthly income. For a PENSIONER visa you need funds, verified, of at least 10 time the monthly minimum income in Colombia.

Best place to start, in fact you must start the process at a Colombian Consulate.
