Uribe's Popularity at a Record High- 91.42%

I'm sure Colombiareports will be on later on to post this himself, but this number is stagering. (http://colombiareports.com/2008/07/04/uribes-popularity-hits-record-hi...)

Though I have my doubts of RCN, the number is still indicative of increased support. (http://www.canalrcn.com/noticias/index.php/la-cosa-poltica/la-cosa-pol...)

I hope to God I'm wrong about U, for the better of the people of Colombia.

On a sidenote, U might cancel the referendum, which can only mean making way for Santos to step in... (http://colombiareports.com/2008/07/04/uribe-may-drop-referendum-about-...)

Allow me to give some editorial comment and perspective on this, please, without me wanting to ruin the party for those who passionately support Uribe. (sorry, Simon ;-) )

RCN has the bad habit of only measuring the President's popularity shortly after events that undoubtedly make him very popular, like the assassination of Raúl Reyes or the liberation of Ingrid Betancourt. The way the surveys are held are very nontransparent and it's impossible to check how representable they are.

RCN does not measure approval ratings throughout the year, like we're used to in Europe or the United States. This distorts the perception of the president's real approval throughout the year and leads to strange comparisons like the recent Mitofsky poll and excessive ratings like the 91 percent you see today.
