Uribe, visiblemente molesto, señaló que las universidades no eran “para preparar a jóvenes para hacer bochinches contra el Presidente"

Why would he let the student speak if he wasn't going to the discuss the issues?? and instead accuse universities of aligning with the guerrillas. Next step is to put a soldier in every household... that'll keep everyone from interacting with guerrillas. Forget civil liberties. My goodness, people love this guy

Finally the govt started to clean this university mess up. That was long overdue. About 9 times out of 10 a Colombian university is mentioned anywhere, it's because of some kind of violence.

"Uribe, visiblemente molesto..."

That's like saying "Bush, visibly flustered..."

romy: To be fair, and the initial (Venezuelan) article you linked to clearly isn't what I would call fair in any way, both of them used their share of political and ideological rhetoric.

That is better represented by the other links.

And for whaterever it may count, Uribe did address a couple of the issues in his own way and asked for specific, concrete information about others, which the student said would be later provided.

The issue of guerrilla presence in universities and related violence isn't something that came out of thin air or out of Uribe's paranoia, however, if you look at recent events, including a couple of violent protests involving the use of dangerous materials against the police. Wonder why the ABN ignores that.

That doesn't mean I agree with Uribe's specific words and policies, no, or with repression in general, but it's better to provide at least some more context than what the Venezuelan state press agency quite shamelessly chooses not to.

But then again...sometimes it seems you either have to praise Uribe to the heavens or bash him into the depths of hell.

that's why I provided the other links... however, you can notice the opposite spin to the events from El Tiempo and Semana.

I went to a public Univ in COL. I never understood why police couldn`t go into campus ! I recognize I`m guilty of whistling to them back in the day. Also I recognize I did t out of peer pressure.
But I never understood why campus are almost considered foreing territory or FARC-free zones for that matter. So b/c some leftist students (guardias rojos, bunch of impresionable kids) throw papas-bombas the the other students can`t get an education, police can`t patrol campuses to ensure students and staff security?

Is that something wrong with that or it`s just me?
