Uribe has a one track mind

He seems to think that if he wipes the guerrillas out then all will be well in locombia. So after the guerillas are wiped out will that feed the 40% of people in Colombia that are poor.
He is embarking on a very middle class desire. Of course the majority of Colombians support this action but how will Colombia develop after the guerrillas. No country in South America has guerrillas and they all have bad economies. I think COlombian people believe that some thing special will happen when there are no guerrillas. IF one day that is true then they will realise that behind that is a hollow victory as the people of Colombia will be even poorer having to pay a huge military debt to the USA. If you are reading this Uribe you must understand that you have to work on all the problems of Colombia at the same time.

Kerry, Now I am even more confused than usual. You use the word "locombia"... Others have used the word "chibchombia"... What is the correct term to describe the beloved country Colombia?

.... Solving all problems at the same time sounds perfect in theory, but definitely stumbles in practice.

That doesn't mean that efforts in multiple directions don't have to be made. On the contrary, I support the fact that more effort towards improving the economic and social situation of much of the poor population is necessary.

Just stating that it's practically impossible to even pretend to solve everything at the same time.

Venezuela for that matter has had a relatively similar number of poor people, even under Chavez. And they have no guerrillas, btw, despite that fact. They did a pretty good job at getting rid of them when it was relatively easy to do so, and they've had plenty of money due to their oil economy. Yet that didn't solve all their problems at the same time either. Similar situations have occured elsewhere in the continent.

Other than that, I don't really see us being full of "huge military debt", at least in a traditional and non-abstract manner, with the U.S.

After all, the U.S. believes that it's currently working towards its own strategic, ideological, political and economic interests. They aren't exactly lending us money and equipment for the most part, more like a)selling us stuff at more or less reduced prices (with the emphasis on the "more or less", since sometimes there aren't even any reductions at all) b)granting us stuff for free (though the U.S. pays its own contractors and companies involved, of course).

Colombia sin Farc The idea is that once the bandit groups are destroyed then the country will enjoy the free flow of goods and services. Also, the military budget can be redirected to developing the infrastructure of the country.
