URIBE FOR REELECTION IN 2010 (JUST NOT NOW!!!)

Although Uribe's safety and economic achievements are to be acknowledged, his REELECTION dreams are to be greatly criticized.

If URIBE really CARED about solidifying the rule of law, strengthening democratic institutions and the importance of the constitutional process, he WOULD HAVE advised his own party to have ANOTHER Uribe-like candidate run on his platform next year so he could have run for reelection in the 2010-2014 term. This would have shown that the success of Uribe's policies are not due to his CAUDILLO-like persona but rather to the power and consistency of his ideas. As I've stated before, politicians come and go but established and well-deveoped ideas can stay for a longer time.

Presidential REELECTION should be given a chance, just not IMMEDIATELY.

Why is it that most Latinamericans are still so fixated with MESIANIC, CAUDILLO leaders?

Look at Uribe's Colombia or Chavez' Venezuela.

Don't most Latinamericans believe in the strenghtening of the democratic system? How much more time do they need to waste to understand that Politics and ideas are NOT about the politician but rather about IDEAS themselves and their strengthening and transcendence?

Bogotá's recent political history is a good start and a telling example to Colombia and other Latinamerican countries about the development of ideas and the strengthening of political processes.

Just a thought. If the gentlemans ideals are not carried out, why do you think this is?

One man at the top will quickly fall if those below him pull the rug from under his feet.

If those at the lower levels are also corrupt, he will have to tread softly. These things take time and it is only when you have the full backing of those who put you there in the first place, that you will be able to make any headway.

In other words, the guy who is at the front is like a horse, it is the people behind who pull the reins that guide the head.

My stated facts, although interesting at times, are generally irrevelant.

The brain is like a parachute, it only functions correctly when it is open. Pax vobiscum.

Excellent decision on the part of the Constitutional Court. Let the Colombian voters decide if they want Uribe reelected.

GDL Correct me if I am wrong, but I am getting the impression that the term "democracy" works pretty much the same way as "football": it is one thing in the US, and a complete different game in the rest of the universe, leading to useless parellel monologues instead of constructive interactions. Your communist-democracy dichotomy suggests that.

GDL, Communism is what I was taught in kindergarten: Share!
Communism is what I was taught in church: Share!
Communism is what I was taught in college: To each according to need, etc. etc.

But all that brainwashing didn't work... I rebelled and became a selfish capitalist!

If you believe opinion polls many Latin Americans would prefer a return to authoritarian or dictatorial governments if it meant more jobs, housing, education and healthcare. Many of them think/thought their limited democracies would quickly solve centuries-old problems.

I read about the poll in the Miami Herald, there are probably more details buried here:
