Urgent Question

Guys,

I’ve been here in Medellin since June 3rd. My flight back to NYC was scheduled for the last week of June. Obviously I missed it and since I was a freaking retard and used Orbitz it was unbelievably expensive to rebook a new date. Basically I lost the flight back. Now here is my problem. As I look through Spirit, Avianca, American, and Copa I am being told I can not purchase a one-way ticket? What the F???? I’m a US Citizen going back and I need to pay for a flight back to Colombia when I have no idea when I’m coming back?

1. Is this true?
2. Has this happened to anybody?

This is ridiculous....

Thanks for any help you can provide

I purchased a one way for my wife the same day she was granted her K-3 visa. Perhaps you need to speak to a live representative rather than trying to book online.

Actually,

It is a legal quagmire for them.

But you can purchase using Expedia when in country. Sometimes a round trip is cheaper anyway.

It happened to me. You can fly one way to Orlando through JetBlue and from there take a separate flight to NYC (I am not sure if JetBlue flies to NYC but you could use another airline).

Check the prices though, sometimes getting a round trip ticket and not using the return is cheaper than flying one way.

Thats Bullshit because I purchased a one way ticket from MDE to MIA on Avianca when I overstayed my stay in MDE on AA...but this was 3 years ago.. have things changed? Also it was like $480

I flew, and purchased, a one way ticket from BOG to MIA 2 years ago on Avianca. I used a US credit card, purchased the ticket Online IN Colombia. I can't believe they are making it that hard all of a sudden. (you being a citizen and obviously using a US passport). Maybe you know somebody who could buy the ticket for you in the US and then you just show up at the airport - like a 'will call'.

But like somebody mentioned above, it is usually cheaper to just buy the round trip tics anyway.

In September 2008, I missed my Spirit flight from Cartagena to La Guardia and had to purchase a one-way back. It was done online at the airport by one of the Spirit agents. It cost so much that I tried to purchase a round-trip but that came out twice as expensive so I just paid for the one-way and vowed to leave earlier than necessary next time. I have stopped listening to my gf telling me that we have enough time to catch the transport. We never do.

We always arrive 4 hours before our departure time (BOG). Even at that there has been a couple of times where we only had to wait 10 minutes before they started boarding our flight. Of all the airports I have been to around the world, El Dorado takes the longest by far. One way tickets are out there, they are just pulling your chain.

I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

I got one on expedia, 1 way out of colombia, it was expensive, and last minute, but it got me half way home, at which point i used my standby passes the rest of the way, if you're flying back to somewhere cheap it might not be so bad, nyc could be an easy one, failing that, fly to miami or ft lauderdale, then fly last minute on southwest or spirit or something.

No matter where you go, the Korean tour bus isn't far behind.

At any rate it is an argument that needs to be made live and in person.

Dear Mitch Alvarez,

Thank you for writing to Spirit Airlines and bringing to our attention your concerns regarding booking a one way ticket online.

Mr. Alvarez, we are sorry, but our system will not allow customers traveling from international destination to book a one way flight. You will need to book a roundtrip and make the return portion a refundable fare…you will need to book your ticket at our ticket counter in Medellin, Colombia.

Thank you for contacting Spirit Airlines.

Sincerely,

Zenny Zarzuela-Herrera

I am currently in Medellin, Colombia. I am a US citizen and need to get back to NY asap. However while trying to purchase a ticket online it is forcing me to purchase a round trip ticket. I live in NY and have no intentions of coming back to Medellin for maybe a year or two. Please assist me with this situation. Why is this required? Can someone purchase a one way in NY for me? What options do I have?

I have been a loyal spirit customer since the beginning and have never had any problems with your airline. Please help!
