Updated info on Importing a Motorcycle....

Ok, so I officially did all the post research and came up with nothing official or detailed...so please don't respond with "research the old posts!" jajajaja

Now...what I am looking for is updated experiences/information on importing a motorcycle to Colombia. I am looking to purchase a new bike and ship it to me here in Medellin. I am here on a 2-year Visa and have a Cedula Extranjero...

1. Do you pay sales tax in the US since it is not being registered, rather bought and immediately shipped?

2. Can any regular international shipper ship the bike, or does it have to be a special broker of some sort?

3. I assume it would be received at the Medellin airport, could everything be done there regarding taxes and paperwork?

4. What exactly is needed to register and insure the vehicle here? And what are the continued costs of registration and insurance?

I know its' asking for a lot of info, but any input might be of assistance not only to me but others who might search for this info in the future!

Thanks in advance!!!!

1. Depends on the State
2. Almost any international shipper-do a google using exports, Colombia florida
3. First mention of shipping by air-the cost just went WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY up
4. Check DIAN's (Dirección de Impuestos y Aduanas Nacionales) site at http://www.dian.gov.co/ Have to have a small policy that covers injuries to 0THERr persons. For yourself you will go to a private insurance company and buy what you need

Last but not least, buy used in Colombia and it is VERY dangerous to ride motorcycle in as much as you will be the prey and the other drivers the predators.

my research on this indicated that if you are not a licensed mc dealer/importer, once you purchase the bike in the states, it is no longer classified as a new bike, but a USED bike, which you cannot import...(even if it has ZERO miles on it).....buy from a licensed dealer once in Colombia, which is what i will do once there......you will pay a little more initially, but it is offset by what you will pay for air if you could import it, which is ridiculously prohibitive in cost. by boat would be less expensive, if it was possible...it will be HD of Bogota for me....i will have them order the model i select.....my situation is that i can obtain a HD locally for $1 over dealer cost, but i found out it is not possible to import...there are a handful of threads on this already....

you pay sales tax and registration in the state where you purchase it.....if that state charges sales tax....ie, in California, Governator Arnold Schwartenegger needs his sales tax cut, AND you will not be able to take possession of the bike until AFTER you complete the registration process and pay the appropriate fees....

i even tried to arrange a US Harley dealer to ship dealer-to-dealer (SJ Harley to Bogota dealer) which would save me a ton of money ($1 over dealer cost), but that was also a NO-GO......pout-pout.....=(

there's one thing everyone forgot, and i only remembered this after having seen it first hand. on a flat surface of almost every part that could be stripped off the bike,(fenders, handlebars, etc.), engrave deeply, not write, but engrave the serial number of the bike. i noticed this on the bike of one of my colombian nephews. she said it's so that if it is stolen and parted out, they can trace the parts once they resurface.

That Colombian Import Tariff will add around 33% on top of the bike purchase price in the states! Cheap, in Argentina its around 70% LOL

I have been going through all this regarding taking a bike here........as you know...bringing used just does not happen.........Two dealers here in Medellin told me yesterday that they could get the bike I want.......Honda Goldwing.......25% tax....then 35% of that total for some other tax......on and on......total for new Goldwing $45,000.
However, it is apparently easy to get an import permit for 3 months..........take it out of the country for a day.......then back in for another 3 months........I´m also told that by taking it out/in at a small crossing with Ecuador............talk nicely to the guy there or whatever......etc etc...............
This process also allows you to keep on your own registration and plates..............
Still checking all this out........more later................anybody know if this is all crap or not..?

.........Its useless to argue with ignorance

This may be slightly off-topic, but of some use to someone. I've imported my motorcycle into Colombia a number of times on a Temporary Authorisation Permit which you get at a border for the period of your visa.

FYI: Here is the availability and price list of new motos in Colombia.

Also, here is Yamaha's own site, which lists a few more bikes than are included in the list above.

Repeated Import permits sounds great if you live next door to the border and you want to spend part of your life doing that. but, if i was the OP, and was in medellin, 4 trips to the border every year i live there is a huge waste of time. save up the money then buy locally.....unless one is collecting aluminum cans now for retirement purposes.....=)

thanks, Expatriate....i will be checking that out...!

Thanks everyone for all the information... I am still desperately debating it, and will have to get the exact tax amounts before making a good decision. I guess nobody knows this information off-hand.... I am leaning towards just buying a local bike, and forking out the cash!!!!!

The "lovemedellin website" is a piece of crap made by some moron who has only been to Medellin once...you'd be better off reading the Lonely Planet advice from a guy who never even came here!
