Update on importing a motorcycle and TEMPORARY PERMIT

I write this primarilly for the beneifit of those that gave me such wrong advice last week...........not to be snippy Vicshare...........but just so that you are aware of how the process works.............I'm sure you a fine person...and enough is enough.

Anyway........it was shipped with Centeruin air cargo ........I didn't use an import agent as the guy said I didn't really need to bother. I went to the airport this morning.........they brought me around to check the bike.........then I had to pay Centurian $15 for the release documents. With these I went next door to the DIAN office. The DIAN officer took my documents.......filled out the forms for me........then checked the VIN number on the bike.................didn't even look in any of the compartments.................back into their office........she completed the paperwork...............gave me the Temporary permit...........wished me luck......and I rode off into the sunset............well.........actually ......it was pissing rain.......
Then I went to an insurance agent in Laureles.............got the SOAT for $237,000.......and full coverage including Theft insurance for considerably more.

I know this is not for everybody............the risk of bringing a big bike down here......but Colombia is such an incredable country for touring.......for me it is a risk worth taking.........and I am sure for others also...................and the whole process was simple..............

Wow, if that is round trip ... not too bad.

not a round trip.......and there are other costs............eg....$150 for a custom made crate.............$50 to get a guy to bring the crate in from the airport...........other bits and pieces.............like I say......it's not for everybody............I just wanted to share my experience of the process for anyone considering the same............

I appreciate the info. To bring a bike down for a week or two, that would be silly. But if somebody was wanting to tour the country for 5 or 6 months, that is reasonable.

did you remember to engrave the vin/license number on everything?

dan

RAAAY says on Aug 21, 2007, 20:40:

it's optional.................even with the Theft insurance..........my biggest surprise was being able to get it in the first place............and it's with Suramericana.........who I'm led to believe are highly regarded...........
And no..........I didn't go for the engraving................in fact........with the amount of insurance I have on this thing.....................I may leave the key in the ignition..........

How long is the temp permit good for? Did you get one of those orange vest with your plates on it?

Nice to hear your comments, not as bad as many here led us to believe, the process that is! Good Luck! Go for it!
