Update Avianca/JetBlue Flights from USA

Avianca has backed away from plans to fly Orlando (MCO) to Bogotá (BOG) and has opted to begin Washington, DC/Bogotá operations instead.

JetBlue has been given FAA approval for daily, non-stop flights from Orlando to Bogotá BUT just when or if it will begin operations is still up in the air. IF servicet ever starts it will be late fall. JetBlue's decision might caused Avianca to take a second look.

Spirit Airlines (NK) is scheduled to fly Fort Lauderdale to Bogota direct starting around September 1st. They are already flying to Cartagena from FLL I believe. Spirit has developed a pretty neat little Latin operation out of Fort Lauderdale. (Using the authority that UNITED airlines is not usuing since they bailed out of Latin America I believe?)

Amerian Airlines was holding authority for seven weekly flights from the United States to Colombia but since they were not using them the DOT gave them to Spirit and JETBLUE from ORLANDO but supposedly American Airlines is suing the DOT for giving the routes to Jetblue and Spirit. I thiink this is what is holding up Jetblue. Court action. Use it or lose it! Supposedly they, JetBlue, have a ticket counter in Bogota already.

US Airways had applied for Bogota from Charlotte but was denied. It would be interesting if United ever started service to Bogota directly from Washington Dulles since Avianca starts direct service June 13th. Rumor says Avianca may try to dump the alliance with Delta and go to Star Alliance with UNITED and LUFTHANSA?

Supposedly Aerorepublica (Copa) or Satena was going to fly to Fort Lauderdale or Orlando as well?

By early next year should be all worked out. Again, when will Colombian authorities get wise and let Aviana/American et al serve San Andres Island directly from Miami?

Just flying and talked to some JetBlue people, so some news:
to BOG has been suspended indefinately b/c of high oil prices.

Spirit to BOG was to start June 26th, but it may be pushed back (otherwise they would have already run some wacky $9 promotion) so September 1st as sanandreddi says may be accurate...

American just cut their flight from Chicago to BA today. More flights from San Juan and Miami are expected to follow.

That BsAr flight comes and goes seasonally, and has been dropped and come back in the past, but it would not surprise me if it were more permanent with AA's dire straights.

I was always flying Avianca on my monthly trips however in April Avianca raised all fares by $140 with a fuel surcharge which doesn't appear on the cheaptickets.com, sidestep.com and various websites. In the search Avanca always shows up with low-ball prices however when you try to book you can't.

So now I am back to Copa. Copa is $137.50 one way Miami to Medellin plus taxes. I have tickets for the next couple of visits on Copa. I don't especially like the airport in Panama but saving the money for more trips is worth it.

Cartagena is a cheap trip on Spirit for under 300 round trip including taxes but its hard to find a flight from Cartagena to Medellin. Of course, for 70,000 pesos I could get a round trip bus ticket which takes 14 hours!

BTW, at MIA I park at the Airport fast park. 7 bucks a day plus a free day plus free days with the Frequent Parker program. They are exceptional.

larry, I agree with you about the Panama City airport. What is up with that place? You can buy a 58 inch TV, duty free Scotch or a pair of Gucci sunglasses but there's only one restaurant and it sucks. And heaven help you trying to find an aspirin, or a magazine. It's like some kind of freakish mall from hell.

Well, I hope that JetBlue and Spirit are sooner rather than later, but the airlines are caught scrambling in this environment.

I tend to think they are good investment at this point, but that is another matter alltogether...

BOG is now on the drop-down list of destination on Spirit's website, but still pricing really expensive...
