unoficial malaria warning Buritaca

This is just some grapevine info but a couple of family members of my neighbour just got malaria (paludismo) while working near Buritaca. They are in a bad way. That's all I know.

malaria is endemic to much of Colombia in all rural areas below 800 m (2624 ft). Prophylaxis with Lariam, Malarone, or doxycycline is recommended for those areas. Use a bug spray with DEET as high as you can get.

Sorry to hear about that Chriscan...

As Gator rightfully wrote, malaria is indeed endemic in much of Colombia in rural areas below 800m but, sadly, some PBH posters still pretend there is no risk.

And whilst we're are talking about this subject, where there is malaria there is also a risk of Fellow Fever (not too mention Dengue which is is also more or less rampant).

This is not a criticism about Colombia - you know me well enough on that one. But there IS a risk. It may be a small risk, but it still remains a risk.

And there is NO CURE against Yellow Fever which has an average mortality rate on one in three.

For Christ's sake, don't gamble with your life (is it really worth it?) and get the Yellow Fever vaccine which will cover you for 10 years.

And as Gator wrote, protect yourself against malaria if you ever visit risky zones. Just remember that female mosquitoes only bites AFTER sundown. Thus, if you're on a day trip to Tayrona Park (for instance), you're not really at risk unless you spend the night there...

Malaria, yellow fever and dengue are like AIDS: It's not only the "others" who get it. You're are risk too.

It's up to you whether you wish to play Russian roulette on those ones...

Better to have tried and failed than having regrets all your life about what you MIGHT have missed
