Unlocked iPhone in Bogota - How much? Should I bring to sell?

Hey all,
Was wondering if anyone thought it made sense to bring 3-4 unlocked Apple iPhones down to Bogota with me to sell? I'm wondering how much these would fetch as they are not sold in the local market. It would work on all providers but the only available language would be in English.

Perhaps if any of you are passing by a mobile phone store, you can inquire as to how much they would pay for 3-4 which they could then resell on their own.

The cost of an 8GB iPhone worldwide is as follows:
$399 - United States (NOT included taxes, usually around 8%+)
$542 - United Kingdom (including VAT)
$562 - Germany (including VAT)

Although they only profile one Latin American country, Commonwealth Securities iPod Nano Index shows Brazil consumers paying the most for an iPod Nano. Based on all of this and the fact that people in Brazil pay almost 120% more for the same product than people in the United States, I would think a iPhone if it was sold on the local market in Colombia would probably run around $600. Again, I do not know the tax structure for imported items, but I would assume that it is similar for most countries in South America to discourage parallel trade. I'd of course be sneaking these into the country in my carry-on.

Of 26 countries surveyed, Australia is the eighth cheapest place to buy a 2 gigabyte (gb) iPod nano in US dollar terms. The most expensive country is Brazil (US$327.71), the cheapest is Canada (US$144.20), while in Australia the local purchase price of $219 in Australia converts to US$172.36.

How did you get a hold of an unlocked iphone?

I unlocked it using various tools that the underground hacking community has cobbled together.

They said I couldn't play football I was too small / They say I couldn't play basketball I wasn't tall / They say I couldn't play baseball at all / And now everyday of my life I ball.

If there are any patches in the future or upgrades to the software the hacked phone will not be able to take them.

Yea geringoloid you have a very strong point. But been realistic. . a guy who can afford and Iphone in bogotá, usually don´t use computers. They have secretaries that "download" stuff for theirs. . . ("Huy mamita, me puede bajar este archivo que me mandaron? gracias. . .) and even (in the strangest point of the universe, where this "secretary" actually knows something about gadjets) she´ll probably won´t speak english (or "secretarial english", a few phrases like: wait a minute, welcome, goodbye) so she won´t know how to connect them, therefore doesn´t even know how to upgrade it¡.

And, in here comcel, tigo and movistar uses REALLY OLD GS3 technology. And have overcharges fares.

So and upgrade for that kind of phone would be simple useless in colombia. As long as they made calls it´s ok. . .

rhydewithdis says on Oct 7, 2007, 07:14:

Yes I hear some people make this point about the upgrades not being possible -- I agree 100% that is true up until the point the hacking communities figure out a way to do so. That being said, this does not seem like a MAJOR drawback only because:
1) I'm sure very few people use iTunes in Colombia to begin with, yet MANY own iPods
2) When anyone buys a cell phone even today, they rarely ever expect to be able to update the firmware. The iPhone works amazing as-is out of the box; sure updates will increase functionality, but the simple fact that Apple makes it easier to do so shouldn't create a dependency to want to do so, should it? Especially if we do not expect to be able to do so for our phones made by any other manufacturer.

Thoughts?

remember, the iphone is more than just a phone. it's like a minicomputer and my computer needs updates all the time.

the only other problem is that I've never ran into anyone who knows what the iphone actually is. it doesn't carry the status there yet and a $600-$800 is a lot of money to a colombian.

i'm sure you could sell them though.

good idea though, and i'm going to get one........but i'll wait for the real thing.

Very little Apple penetration into Colombia other than iPods. I wouldn't expect a lot of people to line up for iPhones.

I'd also be VERY leery of running a data-intensive device like that on a local mobile plan. You might just end up with a zillion peso bill.

Two Points - I'll leave it to you to figure out whether it's worth it. I do want an unlocked iPhone. But since the iPhone still has glitches that Apple is addressing, the updates are necessary. So to buy an unlocked iPhone at this stage makes it as Mr. H says, a zillion peso bill.

And yes, there is interest in iPhones in Colombia, in Bogota and Barranquilla, where I was last month. However, at those prices and in English only, no one's gonna buy them now, including those with the disposable money.

And yes, people do use iTunes in Colombia. They may only use it to update their iPods, but they use it.

There will be a market in Bogota for a phone that works NOW and continues to work for a while but I have no idea of the price. I've never been to a city except Cartagena.

Yes, the secretaries won't be able do it but I'd bet money the owner of the phone will find someone to make the required changes. This is the major reason for having a domestic, driver, body guard, secretary etc. Part of the duties of employees is too get things done. The cost for the rich is NOT a problem.

Fixing, unlocking, chargers etc. is readily available, even where I live. These guys are GOOD. I have discovered that some of the more exotic items would need to be repaired in a large city.

One downside to selling to the wealthy is that their employees might be asked to fix the problem and you don’t want the problem to be YOU. Joking a little but I heard someone was given a cell phone to eliminate a problem. Things are getting cheap, except for chickens. Price is UP. I’m raising 15 chickens that will be ready for sale about December 15. I think they all might be sold on advance orders.

Not me,, nothing is tooooooooo good so three ducks are being raised. Ducks are great on the BBQ and I’d suggest training the duck to not fear the BBQ.

Alezzz - ALL unlocked iPhones are being "bricked" including those using the software you posted. Apple's latest update renders all unlocked iPhones useless.

Here's a discussion where it's all been experienced. The software you mentioned is also discussed. People have resorted to spending another $450 to buy a new phone altogether.

toneloc24, what you are saying is totally INCORRECT. If you have an unlocked phone, there is NO MANDATORY requirement to upgrade to the latest firmware. You can keep your firmware in its current state and just miss out on the latest features, the most notable being wirelessly being able to shop, download and sync music from the iTunes music store. Again, if you do not have a need for this then the update is moot point since it is not required.

rhydewithdis says on Oct 7, 2007, 20:42:

The bricking was not specific to just unlocked/hacked phones, rather is was happening very randomly and in very isolated cases. Even one of the main people working on opening up the iPhone for external development said; "Sadun said the software update disabled some hacked phones because it was a "troublesome update" -- it even caused problems with iPhones that hadn't been touched. "They messed up," she said."

Dude, I'm not the only one saying it.

Have you been on the Apple discussions site??? Pretty unanimous there. MANY complaints.

Have you checked the other discussion sites? I posted just one. It's pretty unaminous there as well. People with unlocked iPhones are screwed.

Updating is not mandatory, but probably necessary if you want the phone to function to its full capabilities. Apple didn't put this update out to catch hackers. Rather to respond to the complaints of the rest of the customer base. Meaning, the original firmware wasn't working 100% as advertised. If you're gonna sell something, and know that there are glitches, you'd better be able to address them. Apple's doing that.

If you unlocked an Apple phone and tried to use the 1.1.1 update (the most recent), you're $400-600 iPhone is useless. Neither AT&T nor Apple experts will officially restore it once they realize it's been unlocked, at this time.

If you're planning on selling these "unlocked" phones in Colombia, I hope you'll be forthcoming regarding these updates and possible consequences.

Any locked iPhones without 3rd party software, will be restored or replaced by Apple. I am only addressing the original intent of this thread, Unlocked iPhones. Locked phones wasn't being considered.
