Un Robo - Domestic Flights 2x for Tourists & Foreigners

I have just learned that you can no longer book domestic flights on Avianca's website with a non-Colombian issued credit card. This is bad because you can't buy them in pesos at the Colombian rate. The only way to book a domestic flight outside of Colombia is over the phone at Avianca's 1-800 number. They charge you in dollars at double the price. I wanted a flight from Medellin to Cartagena for July. The price came out to around 428,000 COP incuding taxes round trip. Thats about $176USD. But when I called Avianca, they wanted $350USD. Thats double the price its suppose to be. They also would'nt honor the internet price. I have three choices: 1. Pay the rip-off rate; 2. Have somebody in Colombia buy the tickets for me at the Colombia rate; 3. Take a risk and buy the tickets in Medellin when I arrive. Theres a good chance it will be sold out.

Morphus..... Do you or anyone else have any idea why this may be the case? That really sounds like a bad deal. I'll be going to Bogota soon and I will be wanting to fly round trip to Cali during my trip. I buy the ticket when I get to Bog becasue I don't know until after I arrive in Bog when I'll be going to Cali. I hate structuring my trip so far in advance. In my situation it is no big deal because there are always a ton of fights from Bog to clo. I understand your concern.

Honestly, I think your best bet is to have someone there buy the ticket for you, and then you just reimburse them when you get there. Your only talking about a month. Can these people wait the month for you to get there? Why don't you call Aero Republica? I have flown them a few times. They have a very modern fleet and their service is excellent.

what you do is... book your ticket on the web and put in your american credit card information. then, it doesn't go through, but you have the reservation. so you call avianca and act stupid, like, "i don't understand why my credit card didn't go through, but here's the reservation information." then they give you the price from online and charge your card over the phone.

never try to apply logic.

Hey.....bkcarolina..... You may be on to something!! You know, over the years, I have pulled a trick or two like that. Copa really pissed me off one time when while in Panama, I called to change my flight to Cali, and over the phone the lady told me it would only cost me $18 more. Then I get to the airport in Panama to pick up the Boarding pass, and the fools told me I had to pay another $96 dollars in addition to the $18 I had already paid. I had a similar experience with Mexicana. So after these two scenarios, I figured that these guys are either crooks and get away with it, or they are so disorganized and they don't care if they do these things to their customers.

If you can pull a fast one on these guys.....go for it.

Nothing new This started back in March 2006. I posted about it back then. I had to wire the money to a friend in Colombia to purchase my domestic travel ticket for the posted internet price.

Maybe Colombians abroad, even locally, can now let Avianca know how asinine it is to double charge for the same flight.

at bkcarolina That process no longer works. It is now as the OP described. They don't honor the internet rate if you are using a foreign VISA/MasterCard/AMEX to pay. Or you must be in Colombia to purchase in person, paying in pesos. I've spoken with at least 5 Avianca CSRs (1-800-AVI-ANCA) to confirm this.

Oh yeah, they cancel online reservations without payments within 24 hours.

. Looks like thay've torn a page from Cuba's two-tier pricing book... one price for locals, another for tourists. Better take the bus.

Albatross, I would take the bus but i'm going with a friend. He's going to Medellin for the first time and does'nt want to know anything about taking the bus. The two-tier pricing in Cuba is a little more justified since it is a communist country. I would'nt expect to pay the same price as some guy that cuts sugar cane 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for $20usd a month. But in Colombia, there are people that make a decent living. A lot of them have more money than some of us gringos. Why don't they have to pay more?

First I've nevver heard of a flight to anywhere in Colombia being "booked up" except maybe during Semana Santa. But is so just wait an hour or two for the next flight or check with AeroRepublica or Sateana.
