I have done it a couple of times....works pretty well. You can unearth some pretty decent deals if you book in advance. I went Liverpool-Madrid-Bogotà.

Done it a few times now. originally with AirMadrid, (boy, what a mistake that was!), and since with Iberia, (upgraded to Business Class) and I am due to fly with Avianca, (vamos a ver!). Madrid is a great place to spend a couple of days, because of course you don´t want your connecting flights too close together, although with Easyjet, you can change for a fee. But the main advantage is that you avoid the airport fascistas in the States.
