Ughhh, I need a notary public

It's a long story which I would prefer not to go into. In summary: someone stole someone of mine, and is willing to give it back ONLY if i sign a contract beforehand saying I won't sue him and I won't tell anyone he stole the item. He insists the contract must be observed by a notary public.

Does anyone know where the heck in Colombia I can find a US notary public, not a colombian one? Would the US embassy/ambassador/etc qualify? I really don't fancy a friggin return flight to the USA just for the sake of signing a friggin contract!

I realize how ridiculous this question is, and how much of a long shot it is.

Not to put too fine an edge on things but as you already know it'd probably be easier to find someone to just shoot the bastard.

Just get it notarized in Colombia then an apostille at MRE in Bogotá and you will be good to go. Colombian notaries may be unwilling to notarize documents that are not printed in Spanish. It's cheaper than the US Embassy. If you are currently in Colombia and have been requested to sign a document in front of a U.S. notary use in the United States, the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá and the U.S. Consular Agency in Barranquilla can assist. Notary services are available regardless of your nationality. We have one the apostille route several time and have no problems in the USA

Notary services at the Embassy are available from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, except U.S. and Colombian holidays.

hi guys,

thanks for the comments and suggestions :)

sam salmon, that is a VERY tempting idea but unfortunately the person at the other end of the contract is an american who is in the US right now. plus im not pablo escobar. so i will have to put the kabosh on the assassin plan for now ;)

pedro, what you say makes sense but in this case it doesnt apply. he is not colombian, plus he is eager to get this whole unpleasant business behind him. i don't know anyone in his family, but hopefully dealing with him directly will get what i want.

Gator, I will definitely look into using the embassy services as you suggested. I had originally mentioned the idea half-heartedly, as i didnt think the embassy actually offered these services. from what you say, though, it sounds like they have exactly what i need. i don't know what an apostille is, though i have heard that term mentioned before, so i will do some research in google.

cody, its a matter of good cop / bad cop, i guess. I originally pressured him pretty *aggressively* to return what he stole, but now that he has agreed to do so, I figure I have more to gain by being polite and patient.

I don't want to give any more details about the situation because the contract does have a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) clause, which i probably am in violation of just by posting what i have already posted.

thanks guys.

an apostile is a notorized guarantee that the witnessing notory is currently registered and in good standing.

why not turn him over to the u.s. police and send him on vacation to the local slam..forget what was stolen and receive your repayment in the form of his/her incarceration. UNLESS, as you said in your opening comment..."someone stole SOMEONE"...., then, you're in a trick. we're they in colombia, i have extended family members in the know on addressing such matters the colombian way.

dw, seeing this guy in jail would be satisfying, but since the item is worth thousands of dollars I frankly would prefer to have the item back. economically these are tough times ( i just lost my life savings in a series of collosally stupid investments in the stock market that would have been considered high risk in any financial climate). so i need every penny i can muster.

and no, the item is not my heart. i am a cold gringo, i refuse to have my heart stolen, especially not by a random american dude. Colombian women are welcome to try stealing my heart. However, in the end my heart will probably end up being given away for free, as determined by my organ donation sticker on back on my drivers license.

cody, it isn't about control or revenge. its about finding the most efficient method of getting my property returned. and i think that being polite and patient is more likely to work at this time. if things get nasty and i make no progress, i can be a bit more aggressive
