Two tons of cocaine seized in Colombian speedboat

BOGOTA (AFP) — Colombian authorities have seized two tons of cocaine after chasing down a speedboat apparently bound for Central America, an official said.

The drugs were sealed in 70 packets in the boat as it sped across the Gulf of Uraba off Colombia's Caribbean coast.

The vessel was tracked and eventually intercepted by the Colombian coast guard, Colombia's navy announced.

Taken by surprise, the crew attacked the Coast Guard unit, beached the speed boat near the town of Necocli, and fled, the navy said.

More than 100 tons of cocaine have been seized since the beginning of the year in Colombia.

The country remains the world's largest cocaine producer, with an estimated 430 tons produced in 2008, much of it destined for the United States, according to the United Nations.

When Colombian authorities boarded a ship in January 2006, they found more than just narcotics. They also discovered a map with crucial information: the current locations of Colombian and United States Navy and Coast Guard patrol boats.

The Colombians investigated, American officials said, and uncovered a ring of cocaine smugglers who also trafficked in navigational charts, selling them to drug organizations that used them to plan routes and avoid interdiction by law enforcement as they moved drugs on the high seas.

The office of Michael J. Garcia, the United States attorney in Manhattan, said on Friday that since 2002, the ring had shipped thousands of kilograms of cocaine, worth tens of millions of dollars, through the Caribbean Sea and Central America and into the United States and elsewhere.

The ring’s success, the prosecutors suggested in court papers, was due in part to its unusual knowledge of what routes to avoid.

It is called inside information. The day Colombia`s armed forces and police get rid of all the corrupt members , is the day they win this war.
