MEXICO CITY: Two tigers and two lions were seized during a police raid on a mansion used by alleged drug traffickers.

Authorities said the animals were part of a private zoo at the mansion, which was raided at the weekend.

More than a dozen alleged drug traffickers were also arrested, and weapons and vehicles were seized at the property in an expensive neighbourhood of Mexico City.

An organised-crime prosecutor, Marisela Morales, identified the gang's leader as Teodoro Fino Restrepo, who allegedly arranged cocaine shipments from Colombia to Mexico's Beltran Leyva cartel.

All the suspects are being held on suspicion of drug trafficking, money laundering and organised-crime activities, Ms Morales said. Authorities had been investigating the group since 2005.

"This is important, because it breaks a logistic link in the chain that supplies Mexican cartels with cocaine," she said.

Yeah. It was a really sweet idea when those animals were left to starve to death. Luckily, most were relocated, although some of the hippos supposedly remain.
