Bogota, April 13: Two people carrying 138 grenades in a passenger bus have been arrested in Cimitarra town in Colombia, Spain's EFE news agency reported.

The seizures were made Saturday. A police official said the bus, carrying 25 people, was stopped for a routine check.

Southwestern region of departamento de Santander, roughly 120 km southwest of Bucaramanga as the crow flies. Link to a detailed version of the story:

The guy interviewed for the article did not say whether the grenades were destined for the guerrillas or the paramilitaries (like anybody would know or be willing to admit).

They could be destined for everyday normal criminals. I've seen TV news stories where they were tossed into the front living room of someone who,,, denounced,, a criminal.

A vivid memory,, not because of the film showing the damage (no one was killed) but the comment,,

See what happens when you denounce someone.

138 grenades have to weigh a helluva lot-these guys weren't the sharpest knives in the kitchen.

I was going to say exactly what Sam just brought up. Assuming the grenades are actual US military type grenades, each one weighs about 1 lb. Many other countries make grenades in the 1.5 to 1.75 lb range. So, we are talking a minimum of 138 lbs, most likely. I can't imagine walking around town with 69 lbs of dead weight in a bag.

They were going fishing?

Ay Hombe!!!!!

deathnova says on Apr 14, 2008, 15:18:

Fishing would require Mk3a2 type grenades which weigh about 5 lbs each so I doubt it was fishing.

Robert Jorge says on Apr 16, 2008, 09:51:

Hey deathnova, not trying to argue with you, but the Mk3a2 weighs less than a pound. 15.6 ounces to be exact, with 8 ounces of that being TNT filler. I can provide references if needed.

Whatever the weight 138 of them is going to make a couple of heavy bulky bags which are *certain* to be searched by the Army that's what the roadblock is there for.

Which was my point to begin with. I just didn't want people to think these clowns were hauling around 690 pounds of explosives. More like an even 138 pounds: And even if divided by two people, it would be quite a burden to be hauling around 69 pound sacks. I have trouble getting a 38 lb. sack of dog chow into the grocery cart.
