TV in luggage to Colombia

Finally, I got a real genuine question.
Can I bring a brand new 32 inch LCD TV, 36 pounds well protected in my luggage to Curramba?
I was told to remove from box so they know is not for sale. This chit is for me and me only and not to make a few lousy bucks.
The question, have any of you guys out there ever traveled with a TV in maleta?

They get creative with those boxes, fashioning duct tape handles on their prized $40 Black & Decker toaster oven or a Mr. Coffee machine - treating it like a Faberge egg - and annoying the hell out of everyone else (or at least me) as they take forever to find a place for their crap in the overhead bins. CHECK THE DAMN THING!

As Elmo would say,

Thank you.

I brought a complete Computer , Tower, Monitor, printer, keyboard ect but I did repack it(very securely, lots of styrifoam) in another box. I had no problems at all when I arrived in Bogota at the Airport. No questions, just a wave thru,,,

elmo, that's kind of risky in checked baggage. those suitcases really get knocked around. i was going to bring a computer server like that but changed my mind.

i have seen many people though in the Panama City airport loading up with TVs, Stereos, etc., and bringing them back to colombia.

Jut know that if your luggage is lost or if the TV comes up missing the airlines won't take responsibilty. They tell you not to put electronics in your bag and they will not be liable if you choose to.

GregYohn says on Dec 10, 2007, 09:13:

YES!

I have made the plans to ship my 32" TV, but officially the box I have is beyond the acceptable size limitations, not the weight regulations. It was just $420, plus tax!

Avianca says 25 kilos and under is fine and American says 50 lbs and under is fine.
Avianca said on their website that they charge $100 more to ship with their shipping company, but that price may have changed.

I am considering taking the TV out of the box and then wrap the TV in plastic at the airport, so it will be all covered and protected during the trip, if they enforce the size restrictions.

I will also fly with Business Class that leg of my trip, so I will maybe get less hassle!

with Avianca, there are certain times of the year where they won't take these types of boxes. check their website for the exceptions.

would avianca count the box as one piece of luggage

I was on a flight once where a guy had a flat screen TV. He put it in a couple of plastic bags and then wrapped an old quilt or blanket around it and put it in the overhead bin. Didn't take up too much space. I think that would work if you got on the plane early enough and could prevent a bunch of hard suitcases from being jammed against it (or slammed on top of it).

strata2woman says on Dec 10, 2007, 09:57:

Hi mode, there's in bagagge embargo on flights to Colombia from the states [any airline] up till January 10th. You are limited to only your normal 50lbs max and suitcase must be 62" around [total sum of width, height and depth], no boxes of any kind are allowed. I will not recommend at anytime to bring the LCD on your suitcase. I am using CC Logostics [a recomendation of a PBH member] to ship all my heavy stuff to Barranquilla. If you ship your heavy stuff as unaccompanied baggage, the cost per pound is less than taking oversized baggage and extra weight in the plane, I did this last February and I paid a pretty penny. [you have up to 3 months from your trip to send stuff as unaccompanied baggage].

I shipped 400 lbs [LCD TV, microwave, iMAC 24"computer and other personal stuff] for less than $700.00. from the West Coast to Barranquilla. Of course, I will know much better, how everything got there and what I paid to customs once I pick up. I will post then on my results.

I would be worried about damaging the tv. I mean that's got to be a pretty big suitcase to fit around a 32 inch tv even though it's lcd. I believe it's much more protected in the box. I brought my 32 inch lcd packaged in the original box and nobody said anything. Although the airline charged me...I think an extra 200 bucks because of the size of the box.

American Airlines will also occasionally have a "box embargo" and won't take them regardless of dimensions. A few years back, we were taking some boxes(within AA specs) of clothes for a children charity and were told in Miami that we could not take them. The AA reps sold us an overpriced duffel bag so that we could take the stuff.

Elmo, it would be considered one of your pieces of luggage in the original box.... So, if you want to still take your regular luggage, just pay the extra $100 as an extra piece of luggage....

I'm guessing, you'll be entering Colombia with your colombian passport, so you should not be paying any money to DAS, it's for your personal use...

Someone else might correct me, but if you want to be way low, low, low on the radar... Enter with a colombian passport because you're planning on staying forever....

esanch.... Your dad is probably visiting... Elmo is going to retire... permanent vacation...

I don't know about the overhead compartment.... I mean, 32" tv, lcd or not, is pretty wide... the most odd piece of luggage I saw someone struggle with was a guitar case... it fit though... so that could be used as a comparison for size...

coffee beaner says on Dec 11, 2007, 15:08:

So would it be easier to take a 32' LCD TV to Colombia during the month of February as compared to December?
And just to verify, if I have 2 bags and take an LCD TV as an extra bag they would charge me only $100 USD? Thanks!

0 funny, 0 helpful.

msaucey says on Dec 11, 2007, 16:47:

Here's the thing... If you take additional luggage during the "peek" holiday season... December... your additional luggage may not arrive until the next day.... But, if you take it in February, when it's a more non-peek season, it should arrive the same day you arrive...

Basicly it's because right now, everyone visiting for the holidays, is taking extra luggage full of presents and stuff....

My mom and her cousin just left on 12/1/07... Which is still early for the holidays, but their extra pieces of luggage didn't arrive until the next day....

$100 is the Avianca fee, it still has to be under 55lbs.... I think a 32" is less than that... I'm not sure if that's the standard rate for Avianca, but it is from LAX...

Also, note that during the holiday season, you might want to do extra padding.... the people moving the luggage are REALLY annoyed with all the extra luggage, since everyone wants to take extra luggage...

My mom's cousin was complaining to the airline about the delay in the extra baggage... The flight attendant say, "Es que ustedes si son desgraciados, la semana pasada una señora trajo 19 maletas..."... lol.... I don't know if the lady is just paisa and exagerating on the 19 extra pieces of luggage, but apparently the lady was moving back permanently and arranged to have all those bag checked....

The family ahead of me had a package the size of a Fing fridge! It was wrapped in dark plastic. It was no problem. Though I assume they paid a hefty fee to have it carried by LAN. I also saw a guy bring a llano harp back to the US on Avianca. No problem. a 32" LCD is baby stuff compared to a freaking harp.

Anyway back to my question. Avianca normally allows me TWO pieces of luggage not counting the carry on.
So if I keep my LCD in the original box, that's one piece of luggage
The other luggage I bring all my guayaberas and my Calvin Klein’s underwear
I don't have to pay sobre peso or didly squat to aduana or avianca, right?
