Turtle transport to colombia

i was hoping this was already on the site somewhere because i hate reasking questions but i wanst able to find it and have searched the internet for quite some time. does anyone know if there are any import regulations if i wanted to bring a african spurred tortoise to colombia when i move there in january 2008. i have decided i really would like to buy one for myself for xmas but i want to make sure i can bring it to college with me, the turtle will still be small since the one im getting is just a few weeks old (it will be no more than 3 or 4 pounds next year) and then bringing it back and forth to the us while i come home to visit. but it shouldnt be more than 20 ponds in 7-8 years when im done with school there. ANYONE have any experience with moving to colombia or the united states with turtles???

Lay off Anyone following pbh knows Quinceanera has been busy planning for post-secondary in Colombia.

Quinceanera, the Spanish word used in Colombia for pets is Mascotas. I googled it and found this link:
www.colombiaemb.org/opencms/opencms/consuladodc/animales.html

Unfortunately the Colombian embassy pages appear to be down right now, but if you contact them they ought to be able to provide something useful for you.

I was just joking quince because it is definitely not a common question ('cause that sounds like a rare animal to me). I'd be surprised if you could get detailed info on that particular pet, but probably the links people provided can help.

i will be fine, im not going to keep myself in the comfort of my little house in the US just because there is a risk to be an ameroan girl in colombia, there is a risk to walk out the door or do anything else, and my view is if i can help 10 colombian kids before something happens to me (if something were to happen) i just exchanged 10 lives for 1. The embassy page just said that i have to have a good bill of health and immunizations, but i think im going to give them a call because their definition of "pet" probably isnt 3rd largest land turtle, hehe thanks everyone

yes i have to plan ahead with this because i am an animal friedly person im not going to buy a tortoise for xmas this year and then a year from now just get rid of him because i didnt check into this and i find out that i cant bring with with me, and i do know the difference between tortoise and turtle and turtle refers to tortoises too, ALL tortoises are turtles. But no, not a troll, and i do like to plan ahead, and yes i was in colombia almost 1 year ago visitng a boyfriend at the time, and now in the midst of applying to college there, btw are most apartments pet friendly, atleast aquarium friendly? im really hoping to get an apartment at the new building that just opened this month in chapinero alto near javeriana. im still just going to call the embassy on the turtle importing thing. also does anyone know a good shipping company for moving to colombia i would be moving several large boxes with personal items and bedroom furniture, or would it be more cost effective to just buy new things as far as furniture? thanks everyone.

A turtle is for 100 years, not just for christmas. You are pretty young. Are you sure you're still going to want this thing in a couple years when your life outlook changes? You sound just like my sister did 5 years ago with her pet ball python that she just had to have, but thenlost interest after 2 months and gave it away.

Why is it so important to bring in an exotic species and risk having it escape? In addition to helping 10 starving colombian kids why don't you help out the local indigenous turtle species, which no doubt are in great need of asssistance, and raise a baby up for a year and then release it back out in to the wild?

I can't say anything about the Colombian borders, but I am guessing you are going to have a really hard time bringing it back into the states.

I'd wait Both Colombian AND US customs have trouble with the unexpected. I really doubt they see a lot of turtles flying back and forth. At the VERY least, you're inviting a pretty serious secondary inspection on both ends, for you and the turtle.
