Tumaco Colombia

I have met a Colombiana from Tumaco, Colombia via the internet. We are writing back and forth. Can anyone tell me anything about this area and its people. I am trying to stay away from the putas and am hoping this girl is not one. Anyway I will find out soon enough. Any response about the area you can give me I would appreciate. Is it safe for Americans?

Thanks Jim

Tumaco This is a description of the town, no inferences should be made about the person you know there.

Tumaco is a small town in a very poor area of the southwestern pacific coast of Colombia. Most of the population is black. It suffered a major earthquake in the late 70s and since then there have been some efforts to rebuild the town but due to the poverty in the region and lack of political interest in the area not much has been done.

Currently it's not a safe area for americans and in general for anybody because in the last year there have been many drug-related police and military operations in the area.

this is just anecdotal but as far as I can remember, the people of Tumaco have had a very good reputation in southwestern Colombia, known to be hard-working, honest and very uncomplicated. All Tumaqueños that I have met have been humble people, yet posessing a kind of quiet, laid-back dignity. They're among my favorite Colombians.

That earthquake of late seventies was combined with a tsunami that took the lives of many fishermen in that southern port.

Desi

Shawn Colombia is the developing world. There is precious little opportunity for men, and less for women. I understand your fear of her being a prostitute... that's a real danger.

But don't ask us - we don't know her.

Nor does knowing Tumaco help. Prostitution is a legal service industry in Colombia, and I'd guess that it exists everywhere to a greater or lesser degree. But it would be exceedingly strange if some PBH member told you, "Everybody in Tamaco is a puta!" Or, "They're Catholics there - no putas."

Ask her how she pays for her needs. If she can't convince you of some other arrangement, walk away.
