Try some aguapanela!

Now that Medellín has been dealing with some cold rainy nights I've been offering our guests some aguapanela and they have really enjoyed it. All you have to do is buy some panela at the supermarket. Place one 8x8cm cube in about 3 cups of water, bring it to a boil, let it dilute and enjoy alone, with milk or with lemon juice. You can break off a smaller piece and make less if you want. I personally prefer to have the aguapanela with lots of lemon juice, it's also quite good if you're sick with a cold. You may drink it hot or cold. It's a good alternative to tea without the caffeine and it's delicious. Panela is an unrefined sugarcane product obtained by extracting the juice from the plant, cooking it at high temperature and then allowing it to solidify. By the way, Colombia is the number one panela producer and consumer in the world. Enjoy!

An acquired taste for some. When I was a child I loved it. When a well known pediatrician asked my mother what I had for breakfast she answered aguapanela. "Food for pigs", replied the doc. That was the last time we saw that pediatrician. When I went to college in Bogotá I reacquainted myself with it, and loved it. Especially with the bit of lemon you mention, and with some good bogotano cheese. Perfect for a cold day!

maybe he said that because anywhere form 8% to 20% of panela (depending on the manufacture) ..... is ash ....so go ahead and enjoy your ash

have you had some ash today??

If the content of food was an issue nobody in the U.S. would consume pork. I'll have ash in my aguapanela over shit in my Hormel any day.

The diabetes question is a good one. Does any one really know?

well, it's not just 'SUGAR' as we know it...white, bleached, refined and minerals filtered out... hardly. it's actually quite nutritious. lots of minerals and vitamins. it is good for lactating mothers. they been drinkin it for 10,000yrs. can't be all that bad. see if you can eat hormel for 10,000 yrs and not glow in the dark. or worse.

fruit juices, although fresh and clean, are not necessarily good for lactation, as their acids leach out nutrients. young mamas that are breast feeding just need to eat unprocessed foods and avoid liquor and cigs. they'll do fine. GOD took care of that in the design.

I like Baranca Panela. Lately, I've been using it for making hot/cold chocolate milk. It's great with orange juice too. I bought some orange flavored panela cubes yesterday and will try them as soon as my last batch of panel chocolate syrup is gone. When I'm making a fresh bottle for my baby and am using some panela, I like to eat a few bits and pieces.

On another note. A few months ago I bought some small bananas called Bocadillos. WOW! Super flavor. When I left the States and began eating real fresh fruit, not picked green and shipped fresh fruit, I was shocked at the increased taste. These bananas are included. Enjoy.

the diabetes problem seems to have developed since i first came to colombia...with the introduction of 'shit' foods, processed, fast, chem. additives, etc. now, one sees overweight obesity everywhere. 20 years ago, just about never.

I was googling on worldwide diabetes satistics and found nothing new...only some color charts from 2006 showing the spread of diabetes (both types) on Colombia in one of the lower percentage brackets (5-7% of the population ), lower than most of South America and definitely lower thanUSA and most of Europe.

There goes my thesis that the unhealthy diet of many Colombians (white rice, white bread, white pasta), overuse of cane sugar in almost every type of drink, unbearably sweet desserts (manjar blanco, arequipe etc) would eventually result in elevated rates of adult-type diabetes.

I'm with you Greg on this, I don't believe aguapanela is a healthy drink at all, neither for children nor adults. True, there's probably some trace minerals and vitamins but that has to be very, very small amounts; it's just sugar and water, high on energy, low on nutrition. Dental decay, malnutrition, retarded growth are all issues amongst the poorer Colombian social classes; there's plenty of information to support that fact. The substitution of mother's milk for aguapanela at an early age deprives the baby from it's main source of protein.
