Trujillo, A Violent Colombian Town, Deals with its Past

The town of Trujillo, associated for years with Colombia's violence, is also a symbol of the country's attempt to acknowledge victims and search for truth and justice.

BY SIBYLLA BRODZINSKY
Special to The Miami Herald
BOGOTA -- "At the headquarters of Colombia's general prosecutor one morning, Miguel Páez waited impatiently to see the woman who ruined his life.

When he saw alias ''Karina'' being ushered into a courtroom surrounded by five armed bodyguards, he rushed up to her and growled: ``Look at me. Remember me. Remember that you castrated me.''

Karina, a former commander of the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, who turned herself in to authorities in May, bowed her head and was whisked away to continue her confession of crimes she committed during her more than 20 years in the guerrilla movement.

The testimony is just a snippet of the country's violent history. Efforts to record atrocities, seek truth and bring some closure to victims is happening elsewhere in the country."
