typical stereotypes of colombians (from a parisian perspective):

-we are drug dealers
-we love cocaine
-we are all good dancers
-we have beautiful women
-we are everywhere and in large numbers
-we are good for manual tasks (the amount of colombian immigrants in the home repair and remodeling business is amazing, there's even a recent french comedy depicting it called "Travaux")
-colombian students speak good french and have surprisingly good education and cultural knowledge
-we come from a violent country
-and above all... we love Indrid Betancourth!

Kat, everybody lives in their own little world. Even after living over two years in the US, my wife still lives in her Colombian world completely untouched by the world she is living in here. I have no idea how she is ever going to pass the citizenship exam because she knows absolutely nothing about the US. Like the English language, it's all optional as far as she is concerned. Typical of the vast majority of Colombians here, I might add.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

utopiacowboy says on Oct 28, 2006, 09:07:

The UK is quite different from the US. In many places here Latinos are or will be the majority and it's easy for a person to live without speaking a word of English. So I guess she's right, English is optional.

RE: Colombians have heart It is 3 degrees celcius and dark and gloomy as hell. After driving around the city from end to end, the only places with some signs of life were chinatown and the club district around Adelaide Street and we are talking about a city of around 5 mil, where the hell are people, hiding under the fu****&ng rocks?

I am getty pasty due to lack of sun. I wonder if my colombian heart is starting to get pasty as well, this cold penetrates the skin through your pores and probably makes its way to your vital organs.

I am going to open up a bottle of aguardiente to thaw my heart and play some guasca to get my blood pumping, my lovely buddies are going to shoot me for playing that stuff over and over again, but tonight..... maldinga sea, hijuemama, tengo alborotada la malparidez cosmica y todo me vale huevo.

goin_south says on Oct 29, 2006, 12:20:

hey juanpbadillo, let me clarify 1) every Colombiana I have ever spoken with on line or phone, usually in the age range of 37 to 42, has said time and time again about 'Colombia is a peaceful place' and they go on and on. Admirably. I understand their desire that Colombia will in fact be at peace. And, I understand they want (not just me, but) everyone, outsiders, to see the same: Colombia at peace.
2) You and I know (and so do every one of these Colombianas I speak about) that in fact, Colombia has many problems and problem areas, in regards to security.
3) Yes, in my travels there so far, I have never been a part of anything other than life as usual, no problems. Nor, have I seen any of these problems that we read about and know about here on pbh. But, we both know, still they exist.
4) My novia of 21 months was adamant about the fact that I had non-justifiable concerns about security for the first 9 months, before my first trip there. I think she and they fear, if you have never been to Colombia, and they admit the security problems, then you will likely never go there. Now that this relationship is becoming 'seasoned'... there is no hiding the fact. Even finally after nine months, on my first trip, she began to admit: 'no, I cannot take you there'... 'no, that is not a good idea for you to go there'.

So, you see what I say now? They defend that there are no security problems, until a certain point.

Where do we go from here?

I agree... Hi guys! I am having a great time reading your responses...:-) I agree with the fact that many americans have only poor knowledge about rest of the world... not even mentioning Europe!!! But you know what? It is very similar in the UK although people seem to notice other nationalities, let`s say from Europe... it`s just they are very confused about the Central and Eastern Europe... and countries within these parts. When it comes to languages, I went to college to study french as my third language and found only one british woman in the class of 15. There were only 4 people at the end... brazilian, czech, slovak and polish. But have to say that Elizabeth our english classmate was one of the best... :-) nice woman! So, it is not only that americans or british or whoever do not have knowledge of other countries or cultures but also have only limited desire to study other languages! They are happy with english and anyone who can`t speak the language is idiot. how sad but how true... :-(
