Treasure hunting might be fun, but what do you plan to do with the treasure? I understand that you are obliged to hand over certain artefacts to the government.

If you find a 500 peso coin, it's yours. But like medefock said, most artifacts have to be turned in. They take it quite seriously.

mmmm, have to disagree with you there RJ and mede....

I've worked with and openly filmed "guaceros" or treasure hunters here, telling them that their images will be on TV - they don't care and never hand anything they find in. Sometimes they donate stuff to museums or culture houses, but that is because they can't sell those pieces.

Tinto Obviously you've never seen the Colombian metal detectors. They all come with a 20-foot pole and a flak vest.

Bufalo, you would know a lot more than me, so I will admit to being ignorant and/or misinformed. But, I have heard from government sources that the exporting of Colombian antiquities is strictly forbidden. Even the little documents you fill out on the plane ask if you are importing or exporting antiquities - and state how that is NOT allowed. I guess if I was to find an Indian gold necklace that was 1000 years old in Colombia, it would be no problem for me to put it in my carry-on and just go back to the US with my treasure?

Land mines After doing some research I came across an article, that said Colombia was thrid in line behind Iraq, and Cambodia, for land mines crippling people. That don't sound to cool. Like Tinto said would have to check it out thourghly. Don't want to get blown up.

Heck...half the 500 peso coins I get are counterfiet anyway! Sheesh the most embarrassed I ever been was when I had the bano attendant at el centro in Medellin chase me down for giving her a bad coin. Gave her $5,000 pesos! still a bargain.

It is a concept that would do well here in the usa. Pay for a squeeky clean toilet.

Maybe Elmo and I can start a franchise! Anyone interested. Hell we can even accept atm cards!!!!
