Travelling to Columbia for the first time.....

Hi!
I am a young british female and in September am travelling to Columbia for the first time. I am flying to Cartagena - Via Bogota airport - alone and am meeting my boyfriend and friend there. As i am doing all of the flying alone i would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me and any tips on how to stay safe. Also are there any places in Bogota or Cartagena that i should visit whilst in Columbia?
Any advice and help is hugely appreciated!!
Thanks

Spelling of Colombia In Great Britian they spell Colombia with a U instead of a second O, so please lay off the lass. She is correct in the spelling from her origin.

but colombia was named for christopher colombus. it's only spelt with an o for spanish phonetic reasons. nobody ever gets pissed when an english speaker spells brasil, brazil. it's the same thing.

p.s. i agree with you, strobers, on christopher columbus, and also won't celebrate the day.

I just wanted to tell the first poster that she was making a mistake that she should rectify. Columbia is a state in the US and why should ColOmbia be confused with that? By the way SpartanTurk, I am British too! I even wrote to my local zoo as all their signs for Colombian species are spelt with a 'u'. I am not an interfering sad case it just seems people haven't done there homework properly and this annoys me. People are ignorant enough about South America in the UK as it is, so people who do have some connection with the countries there should put them right I feel.

Oh well at least its just a mispelled vowel. If you are in London and take the tube regularly, check out the Sea France ads, the ones that go " Dover - Colombia- Calais" and a cup of coffee...read the small print and it says something so stupid it makes one almost laugh in disbelief. And since I am encouraging traveling on the tube and making ones self a human sausage for at least a couple of stops, I am not going to post what it says right away.

Now you've got me wanting to know and I don't live in London though might be going on Fri. Nearly went on Seafrance last week to Calais but went with cheaper P+O instead but didn't notice the posters when in the Dover terminal.

has any one got any advice that might be able to help me on my travels in colombia?
what does it say on the sea france adverts? i live in London but tend to stay away from tubes so haven't seen the ad yet.

Gold Musuem If you have a few hours to spend in Bogota one of the first places I would visit is the Gold Museum. It has gold artifacts from all the indigenous peoples and is a really interesting visit. Also the house of Simon Bolivar is quite interesting as you will learn some things about Colombian history that most Colombians don't know, like how British troops were involved in the battle of Boyaca which was the biggest battle agaisnt the Spanish for independence. And don't worry about the spelling, I spelled it like that the first time I was there and I still pronounce it like that even though I know it is wrong.

Some places you would like to visit!!! Cartagena has become the Colombian paradise for turists. There you may find many "discotecas" and stuff like that.... However if you are more into the historical things, you reached the perfect place.

Cartagena is an OLD city. A very cool thing to watch is the "ciudad enmurallada". It was created in order to prevent pirate attacks to the city. Also the "Castillo de San Felipe" is very interesting to watch. Since you are in the coast right now, you may go to the "rodadero de santa marta". This is a very pleasent site to visit. Also, you may drive to Barranquilla. Barranquilla one of the major Colombian cities it is about 1.5 hours (driving) from cartagena.

It doesnt matter what YOU choose to do in Colombia. I am pretty sure you will have loads of fun.

I apologize if my english is sloppy.

P.D. I'm Colombian and I couldn't stop laughing at your comments. Really it is not a HUGE deal that some people write columbia.

........ I would like to make clear the last point.
It is not that I don't care if you call my country by the REAL name. It is just that I personally believe that it is not her fault. The media is the one that has done this damage. I just watch Fox News and they talked about the President of "Columbia" Alvaro Uribe Velez!! Or on a CSI chapter I saw a bag that said "100% Columbian Coffee".

This "Ignorant American" can make several recommendations... for Cartagena....for dinner, Plaza de Santo Domingo....on clear night with great food, can't beat it. Find Garcia Marquez's house, ask anyone, it's on the outskirts of the walled historic city. Go to Plaza Bolivar and watch the street performers...there is one very intense comedian that everyone calls "Mimo"...he is not a mime, but has the face of Marceau. Hilarious....! Plaze de Reloj is also a very nice area to catch performances as well...also you can buy dulces there as the market is at the edge of the plaze. Castillo de San Felipe and a walk around Manga can easily consume a day. La Perla casino at night can be an experience, there are regulars there that can really provide some entertainment when wound up. La playa, comida, sol....I can't even begin to start...

Bogota...Museo del Oro, the parks in Bogota, there is a large yard sale in the middle of the city on Sundays, you can find anything that your heart desires, it is that huge. Outside of Bogota, Villa de Leyva, Catedral de Sal, the site of the Battle of Boyaca, the thermal baths at night in Paipa....

Hopefully this ignorant American helped you a little, I know that you will have a great time...Bob

I am sorry you find Americans ignorant First I am of the USA that is part of america. To me America is the most northern part of Canada to the most southern part of the continent ( what some in the USA would call south america) What saddens me most about your post it is very un-colombian for in my travels to Colombia I have met the nicest people on the face of this great earth. Now mind you I might not be the average person from the USA for I think Colombia is paradise, it is a country full of great beauty and great food. A place I feel welcome and at home when I am there. In closing I wish you the best in life .
