travelling from Bogota Upwards

Hello Everyone,

I am planning on travelling North from Bogota and i wondered if anyone had an itinerary in mind. Like places that i should definately see while i am In Colombia,

So far i have been told that Cali, Cartagena and Medillin are worth seeing. Does anyone have any other suggestions of places to see in Colombia?

Everyone has said that the best way to get between states is by air. Are there any safe bus routes between any of these places?

Thanks in advance

Places to visit I would definitely recommend Cartagena and Medellin. I didn't really like Cali, but lots of people love it, so don't just take my opinion and the great thing about it is you are near the coffee region which is a beautiful place to visit.

It's easy to visit places like Tunja and Villa de Leyva from Bogota by bus and safe too. They are very pretty, smaller places that have beautiful colonial architecture and churches and so on. You could also visit the salt cathedral in Zipaquira, that's only a few hours away.

Enjoy your trip!

curious too I'm also curious to find out what the best way to travel between major cities is? Air travel can get quite pricey especially for 2. If you come up with any suggestions I'd love to hear them or any information about good backpackers hostels too. I've found the information online to be limited or maybe I'm looking in the wrong places.

Thanks for your help.

I will try and get off the beaten track as well. Get to see Tunja and Villa de Leyva.

Heading Nth I highly recommend San Gil and Barichara in Santander. These places are 6-7 hours north of Bogota. Barichara is a beautiful colonial town while San Gil is full of adventure sports, nice waterfalls and great places to swim on the river.

I am a bit biased as I do have a hostal in San Gil. I was travelling through the region a few years ago and fell in love with the place and recently returned to set up shop. Medillion and Cartegena are nice but if you want to get a feel for the real colombia get out of the cities and visit some small towns.

If you like hiking head to Cocuy
Beautiful beaches can be found all the way around the country, don't for a second believe that the beaches in Cartagena are an example of a beautiful beach.
The Coffee region is also worth checking out, a guy named Tim has a nice house there but I don't have the address on me at the moment.

Let me know what your interested in seeing in Colombia and I'll give you a better idea of towns to visit.

San Gil Don't think Im allowed to advertise my place on this website but if you want more info on the Santander region email macondohostal at hotmail.com
Personally i wouldn't recommend the lonely planet guide on Colombia. It concerntrates on the big cities and is quite small. Your better off with a copy of Footprint or Rough Guide.

carter You are allowed to advertise your place here, especially since it is new information. Feel free to repeat it occasionally in appropriate threads. It is of general interest to the members.

The posts concerning no ads was about spamming and permanent advertising out of context, especially when it doesn't have directly to do with visiting Colombia.
