Traveling with DVD players.

Hello All.
I've got a question maybe somebody here can answer.
I am returning to Colombia soon and I thought I would by a DVD player for a family I know.
I want to buy it in the U.S. , remove it from the box to avoid possible impuestas at the airport.
But now I'm not sure if a U.S. bought DVD player will play DVD's manufactured for use in South America. I believe there are different region codes are something.
I couldn't find the answer on the net.
Anybody have experience with this?
Thanks

I was going to do the same thing and i was told that USA DVD players do not work in Colombia, something to do with regional codes.

Llove2colombia is correct. In theory they should not work. Vup it is possible that you may be running region free, region 1 DVD titles or your DVD players do not check region codes. Some really old DVD players did not and some of them you can hack.

On Notebook with DVD drives, once you put the movie in it would check the region code on the movie and set it. You can change it five times before it was locked in place.

You can get a cheap and light DVD player for 30 to 50 bucks. I got one for my aunt in Mexico. They just rent movies in Region 1 titles and the pirate one I get her.

Vup I like the picture. I have a craving for a beer.

there is freeware available where you can record a DVD and change the regions when you copy the DVD.......works a great majority of the time, unless the DVD cant be un-encrypted or recorded...ie, roughly 90-95% of netlfix movies can be copied with few exceptions....and you can select whatever region you like......=).

I played all kinds of rented movies (all of which I assume were pirated), when I lived in Colombia. I played them with my Sony PS2 and computer. No problem in either.

You can search for DVD Shrink and DVD encryptor. They both remove the region code.

I have Region 4 titles that does not work on DVD players. They also prompt you to change the region code on the notebooks computers.

It looks like there are plenty of movies that are region free in colombia. You should PM Hollywood. I read somewheres that he runs his own movie rental place in Cali. If any one knows the setup, it should be him.

AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie as soon as it's inserted into the drive, allowing you then to backup the movie using a DVD backup tool such as CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile. You can also remove the RPC region code, thereby making the movie region free and viewable on any DVD player and with any DVD player software.

AnyDVD is capable of removing unwanted movie features, including subtitles and prohibition messages such as copyright and FBI warnings. It also allows you to launch an external application whenever you insert or remove a disc, or prevent 'PC-friendly' software from automatically launching when you insert a video DVD.

Decryption is not all that AnyDVD offers. You can control the drive speed of your DVD drive, allowing you to reduce the noise level when watching movies on your PC. You can even adjust the display frequency of your monitor for both NTSC and PAL displays.

But AnyDVD doesn't just stop at DVDs. It also decrypts protected audio CDs to allow you to copy them.

Consider buying a DVD player in Colombia. They're cheap and they work with anything you can rent at Blockbuster.

I bought two DVD players as gifts for family members in 2004, when DVD players were still expensive in Colombia, and what a disappointment when the first movie we rented didn't play; actually, it was kind of embarrassing to bring a gift that doesn't really work in Colombia. So, yeah, they don't work, I know. Also I know about the freeware to decrypt DVD movies and be able to burn them, but you don't want to give a gift that will force people to go through all that trouble; besides, if the recipients of the gift are not young enough or computer savvy, they won't be able to do it, or won't do it.

I agree with expatriate, I think you should buy it in Colombia.

PD: Pirated movies will work because they are burnt without any zone. So I am guessing that all of you that are saying that your DVD players work fine is because you guys are not renting at Blockbuster or Betatonio.

DVD player are set to play from the factory to play one region, but they have the potential to play all regions by changing the region with a code or sequence of inputs with your remote controler. I found my DVD's inputs on the net, Google it and you might find yours. I changed mine and it plays all regions no problem.
Good luck!!
