Traveling to Quindo & Quimbaya

Hi all,

I am an American and will travel to Quindo & Quimbaya with my Colombian finacee in mid July. Should be concerned about traveling by bus or should I fly? She says that the countryside is really beautiful but I do not want to do anything foolish and end up asking my friends and family for a lot of money.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Juanalejo, have you been to Armenia? That is where she was born.

armenia Yes I definitelly have many times, it is a nice place especially all the surrounding areas. It is now considered one of the top spots for Colombian tourists, ecotourism has become quite big. There are two famous parks, Parque del Cafe and Panaca, the first is a theme Park and the second one is more of a animal farm park. Pereira is another city which is very close by and so is Manizales. On the south is just a few hours away from Cali. The road from Bogota to Armenia is very nice, down the Eastern Range onto the Magdalena Valley across it and then on to the Central Range which a very twisty steep road but with beautiful scenery. Armenia is just on the other side. Hope you like it.

valle de cocora i am going to colombia in november and i would like to visit armenia and it's surroundings, for example valle de cocora. is it safe going there as well? i've heard it's quite a tourist attraction, at least for colombians. i plan on going by bus from medellín to armenia and then south, to cali or rather to pasto. but i've read somewhere (or everywhere) that the road between popayán and pasto is or used to be unsafe. what is it like now?

Pasto - Popayan Hi,
I'm afraid I can only tell you what this road was like a year ago, I don't know if the situation is the same now. I can't imagine it's changed much, but maybe it has. This road is well known for ambushes, so you'd be more worried about getting your stuff stolen than being kidnapped. I normally take the bus around Colombia, but on that trip I decided to get a plane from Cali to Pasto. It was cheap and easy to book. I decided to do that because I had a lot of stuff with me and didn't want to take the risk. I mean, provided the situation hasn't worsened, you could take the bus by day and you'll probably be ok. The thing is, nothing is guaranteed, especially in Colombia. Maybe someone will read your post who lives in the area or knows it better. Good luck anyway!

Rikito,

I think you'll love Armenia and the rest of the 'Zona Cafetera'. Just the other day on CNN en Español, they profiled the National Coffee Park on the travel show 'Destinos'. It looks wonderful. The scenery around that area is probably the most breath-taking in all Colombia. I absolutely love the picturesque landscapes, especially on the road from Armenia to Pereira. Here's the address to the Parque Nacional del Café's website:
