Traveling to Leticia - any advice

I am traveling to Leticia soon for my vacations with some friends, any sugestions, something not to do, some places I must visit. I am 26 and eager to experience the amazon. Every colombian should visit its own natural wonders.

Travelling to Leticia I have been there a few times, though not for about 2 yrs now, but I dont think things change much down there. It seems very secure, there is an army garrison there, and no problems with the paramilitaries / guerilla. For me as a European, it is a really nice place, very quiet. The other side of the border, Tabatinga, is best by a long way for night life...you can get a taxi or walk, its not far, there is no border as such. If you want to explore the Amazon, I recommend at least a few days at Amacayacu National Park (take the ferry to Puerto Narin~o and ask to be let off at the park) You can just turn up, they usually have room or can arrange accomodation with the Mocaguas nearby. Puerto Narin~o is worth spending a night at, but there is very little there. You can explore Lake Tarapoto from there (look for an old boat-lady called Araceli, she will do a good deal). Look out for Joel Mendoza....he will be waiting at the airport...very small, scar-facd little guy. He is a real character, but be wary...he is an alcoholic, but very friendly and knows his way around pretty well. Any actual tours, I would probably not recommend him, but for the odd day trip he is OK. Amaturs near the Hotel Anaconda is the main tour company, but expect to pay a lot of money.

Hope this helps
