Traveling there...

I am planning to travel to Colombia next year with my friend. It is not really planned out yet, because we need more information for it. And that's why I am here...

Is it a lot more dangerous for two women to be there than for men? How expensive it is to rent a car and what kind of license does one need to drive? What areas are not recommended for a visit?

Thanks!

My 2 pesos worth... Colombia requires the international driver's license. As far as your other questions regarding driving, dangerous areas, being female travelers, etc...you are going to get lots of comments about the danger of driving in numerous areas of Colombia. Do your research, be street smart, and you'll have a wonderful experience in Colombia.

How long are you going to stay?? Do you want to drive thru different cities?? It would be a great idea, since traveling by car in Colombia is fun and the best way to admire his environment and people. It is not dangerous for one foreign woman by herself, much less for two women. It is wise to be carefull just as in any country. And when not sure where to go to have someone local by your side.

To rent a car would cost around 60 usd per 24 hours. Depending on what car rental you choose.

No Real Need for a Car Expensive! Unless you are familiar with Colombian driving habits watch out. I would opt for bus travel, clean and usually go everywhere. Adapt Greyhound's motto of, "Take the bus and leave the driving to us."

In the city take a taxi-they are everywhere like fleas on a dog. The wife and I will, about 50 percent of the time, ride the bus in the city.

Danger? For the most part, no. However, ask before traveling and follow local advice. For long distances i.e., Bogotá to Cartagena, etc.etc. strongly consider air travel. Unless it have changed you USA licence should be sufficient to rent. One tip. BE SURE AND THOROUGHLY INSPECT ANY RENTEL CAR FOR DAMAGE. I would even snap a few picture of the car before accepting it.

One thing you did not tell us is your Spanish language ability.

Yeah, you should travel by bus Hello!
I am writing you from Bucaramanga - Colombia, the fifth city in the country. I don't know where do you come from, but I can tell you that you can use buses to travel among our cities, they are very comfortable (better than European buses, I can assure that), safer and it's going to be cheaper than renting a car. I could guide you around in places near my city. These days a person from Dallas is having spanish lessons here and knowing.
Colombia is safe if you follow the same rules we colombians follow and knowing where to go.

In Colombia you have to be over 25 to rent cars, they do not operate as in europe where you can pay extra.
At least this is what I found with all rental companies in medellin.

Taxi's r cheap in Colombia, so I think that the best way to get around in the city at least is by taxi as you don't have to worry about parking etc, and if you want to have a drink, you can.
