No problem on the driving front, my Dad only holds a UK driving licence and has hired cars in Colombia a couple of times with no problems.

You just need the driving licence, Passport and credit card.

Driving Please don't drive / rent a car. You REALLY need a good reason to rent a car. I don't know Bogota,, but I suspect finding parking will be time consuming. Driving in traffic,, Ugggggg. ANY accident will WASTE time when you should be having fun.

Most Hotels, Hostels, etc. will ARRANGE to have a TAXI waiting on you at the airport. There will most likely be a small fee, 10,000 extra pesos in Cali is what I pay and the entire cost will be included on the bill. Just give a tip. The best part, they WILL know EXACTLY were you are going.

Life is short,, when I go to Colombia there is a TAXI and my girlfrind waiting to usher me into the waiting cab and whisk me to my accommodation. She will check in early and rides out to greet me at the airport in the same cab.

In the morning a steaming rich (real) cup of coffee is brought to me in bed. A shower and by that time breakfast is served. After which a relaxing ride to the Bus Terminal where a Mercedes Diesel BUS is waiting. I ride in comfort listening to the gentle strains of Colombian music on the radio and viewing spectacular rural vistas. Quaint farm houses, distant processing plants amid fields of Sugar Cane stretching into the distance. The wind gently wafting my hair. (Waiting for the 3 mil haircut with razor trim and shampoo).

The bus drops us off at the front door of the house. The refrigerator will be stocked with fresh fruit for snacks and juice served to me either in the hammock or while I recline on the patio sofa, resting up from the tiring journey. I eye the chickens and notice they are quite fat, even over fed and eagerly wait tomorrows lunch.

Now,, I really do miss this place,, plus I need a nap.

Colombian Chickens are crowing about the new President of the U.S. who will assure that From each according to their ability to each according to their need.

I agree with Poco, total waste hiring a car in Bogotá, IMO. Public transport is very cheap. You don't want to get in an accident and once you see the drivers you will know that you need serious skills to drive here. You might also get lost and end up in a part of town you shouldn't really be in.

Ride the busetas, transmilenio, taxis and flotas.

Have a great trip and fill in the forum when you return, we always like to read about the travels of our fellow PBH posters.

Transport from Bogota to Villavicencio is very good, you can get very comfortable buses with air-conditioner, or you can take one the Vans or a taxy. the vans will cost more or less 13.000.COP. You can check with Flota la Macarena and expreso Bolivariano too their Buses are very nice too. Everytime I go there I travel either by car or sometimes I take the vans because they a bit faster and tend not to stop too much on the way.

I didn't have any shots when I travelled to Bogotá.

As for impressing your future mother-in-law that is entirely your choice. Hire a car (taxi)with a driver if you think a flota would label you less than a good catch. I have driven in England, France, Italy, Belgium on very narrow roads with some very crazy but skilled drivers and I still wouldn't drive in Bogotá, perhaps on the coast where they are more laid back. In Bogotá a flota wouldn't think twice of coming straight at you on the wrong side of the road as it passes a row of slower vehicles.

Listen to Kat she knows this area well.

check prices for rental cars you'll change your mind quickly. You can ride and enjoy yourself cheaper than driving without the hazards. Check other posts. You can rent a taxi for the day or several hours, though I would take the bus for your purposes.
