Traveling from Bogota' to Panaca

I am an American who will be traveling to Bogota' with my fiance' to spend Christmas with her family. One of the places we will be visiting and staying at is Panaca, which I understand is a "Coffee Park"; a coffee plantation which has lodging, etc. We plan on driving or taking a bus from Bogota' to Panaca. Is this a safe route to travel?(I am a gringo who will be in Colombia for the first time). Is flying a better option? Any feedback or travel info would be great.

VISITING PANACA Hi there,

First of all I would like to wish you a great time during your trip to Colombia.

Answering your query I would recommend to do any travelling during daytime, this is just common sense really. It pays to set of at sunlight so you can take advantage of all the daylight. In Colombia there is daylight from 6am til 6pm.

Flying into Armenia could be an option but the air tickets are quite expensive and the thing with domestic flights is that you must book them with lots of anticipation to get god discounts, my family and I got return Bogota to Armenia flights for December and January for $330,000 each a couple of weeks ago. This is with Avianca, only West Carribean serves the route also, they are slightly cheaper and have less daily frequencies. From the airport you can charter a taxi to Panaca, but agree a price. But I am sure if you arrive at the airport on a plan that includes accomodation Panaca would have a pick up service.

If you drive you can do the route in about 6/7 hours. It is a tough drive as it is mountainous and alot of climbing is involved, especially reaching La Linea between Tolima and Quindio. But the scenery is wonderful and you should stop at the Parador La Paloma on the Cajamarca-Calarca road to have something to eat, they do a good avena.

By bus there are several bus companies that do the service, it will take about 8/9 hours. The best are Expreso Palmira S26, Expreso Bolivariano and cost about $35,000 each way. If you get a bus, then at the Armenia bus terminal you could catch a minibus service to Quimbaya, that should take you into the main square and from there you could catch a taxi to Panaca. Otherwise you could also contract a service directly to take you from the bus terminal to Panaca. Remember to always agree a price with the taxi driver, as it is a longish journey it shouldn't be done with the meter.

Panaca Thank you for all the detailed information, it is much appreciated. I will definitely try to stop at the Parador La Paloma. I'll post a comment when I return.

PANACA is NOT Parque del Cafe It´s important to note that PANACA is NOT Parque del Cafe, they´re two different parks and PANACA is not really a "coffee" themed Park, PANACA is more a "farming" Park whereas Parque del Cafe is dedicated to the coffee growing/processing industry and they´re not close to each other but they´re in the same area.
