TRAVEL FROM CARTAGENA TO BANQUILLA
Hi I am new to this site. I will be traveling to Colombia in Jan/Feb next year,
We will be staying in CTG for first part of our trip, then we intend to attend the great Carnival in Barrenquilla.
How long does it take to get from CTG TO BAQ,(we were told an hour, but it looks a lot longer on a map)
Does anybody know any good apartments in safe parts of BAQ close to carnival. There are five of us traveling. We have been to the big carnivals in RIO and SALVADOR BRAZIL and we live in London, which can equal any war zone on a bad day.
We have all traveled to many places in the world.
Any advice or info will be great.
One love Dmj.

I have never made the trip but I hear bout an hour more or less. In Barranquilla I would rent a apartamento hotel like Sorrento or Jesus Alvarez. Everything is inflated in price during Carnaval however. You need to book a place to stay early. Do a search of this site for more information.

Hi
I am from Barranquilla. It takes you about 3 hours from Cartagena to Barranquilla. There are a lot of places that you can stay. Why don't you rent an apartment with your friends?, I think is cheaper that to go to a hotel. You can go in www.elheraldo.com.co. Clasificados. Arriendos (rent). There is a long list of apartments that you can find. For example loook at this one close to Hotel el Prado. Furnished apartments call to this number: 0 11 57 5 3694672- cell phones 011 57 301-4170009. 312-6646431.
Good luck.
Thanks for visitiing Barranquilla.

I will be in Barranquilla Jan 31 but they flying out with my novia to Isle Margarita for a week. To answer your question, the distance from Cartagena to Barranquilla is 70 miles. I was in Barranquilla earlier this month and made the round trip to Cartagena. Best travel is in 8 passenger vans for a about $13 US one way. The vans usually travel full and make about 50-55 mph. So the trip takes about 75-90 minutes but count on 2 hours with dropping of passenegers.

Barranquilla is a huge city and I always get disorientated there. Allow extra time on arrival to get to your accommodation. The maps in the guide books aren’t too helpful and I haven’t found a map of the place yet.
The best way to get to B from C is to use a puerta a puerta they pick you up at your address and deliver you to your address the other end. The bus station is miles from the centre for both B and C (especially C).
The puerta a puerta was on the forum earlier, here are the notes I copied (thanks to the original poster). I have since heard that the service ends at 6:30. Travel at night between C and B is safe however.
Notes: cartagena-barranquilla-santa marta Shuttle Van MAR SOl is a bus service that runs an hourly van service from cartagena to barranquilla then to santa marta.
They use mercedes benz vans that are all very new, they seat no more than 13 people. They are a very organized and an impressive service. What you do is call them give your name and number and where you are, my experience with them is only cartagena to barranquilla and return but I'm certain the service is excellent all the way to santa marta. If for example you are in the hotel dan carlton in the Laguito, you call and reserve your time for the next available bus they run every hour from 6am till 4 pm to barranquilla/santamarta. The van comes to your hotel and they go around cartagena picking everyone up then they stop at the cartagena office near the airport and then they leave on the costal highway to barranquilla when they arrive at barranquilla they drive a route around the city to drop people off, they dont go all the way south in barranquilla they'll drop you off at a point as far south as they go, in cartagena they won't go any farther from the center than pie de la popa (where the monastery on the hill is). If the van is leaving the cartagena office at 6 am they start picking people up at 5am if you call they'll say like be ready at 5:30 am . They always show up i've never been stiffed and i've used them dozens of times. Sometimes if the passangers are from all over cartagena they'll pick you up in a taxi and the taxi will take you to the office where you'll board the van before going to barranquilla.
Best of all it only costs 19,000 pesos and these guys know the highway they fly through the security and speed traps never longer than 1 hour and 15 minutes to get to barranquilla.
I know they're good because all the other van services try and steal their passengers. There's a home depot at the pie de la popa and sometimes when I'm waiting there for the mar sol van the caribe van(another service) will come by and say mar sol sent them for me and its bull shit. Mar Sol is great and a great price, why use a private car for 120,000 pesos they actually take longer sometimes.
Here's the numbers for the mar sol office in barranquilla:
3683272 3694228 3008083147 3135450004 3736425 3574265
their address is calle 93 # 47-13 their right up from the McDonald's
Here's the numbers for the Mar Sol office in Cartagena:
6564192 3008056659 their office address in cartagena is crespo cll. 70 no. 6a/120 When you walk out of the airport in cartagena theres a main street in crespo i don't know its name but you just walk one block to the right and their office is on the sea side of the street, once again walk directly out the airport to the main crespo road and turn right walk one block and you'll see the mar sol office on the right hand side.
I'm going to the carnaval as well and I'm from London!

Hi Guy's thanks for the info. Also any idea's the best places to be during carnival.
We have been to the Rio carnival a few times and had our best times on the streets instead of being in the over priced sambadrome.
Also, which is the best area to rent an apartment,(not to posh) circa to carnival... we are all hard worker, but down to earth, so we need somewhere comfortable to rest our heads, after our days n nites on the local ron.
We are five guys travelling, so bed sharing aint happening( cant listen to those guy's snoring and farting on holiday any more) but we do expect to pay more because of carnival, but dont want get ripped off. so more advice on apartments would great.
Think we'll take the merc bus from Ctg to Baq and give the burro a miss, I hear they aint to comfy!
Also sorry for my bad spelling of you home town, will not happen again.
