Travel Documents

I havn't seen anything regarding this topic so I just thought I would ask everyone here. I am currently working on getting married. While looking up some of the documents needed for the whole process, right up to the immigration stuff, I found one form "Travel Document" I-131. Now, I know my soon-to-be wife would like to be able to travel back to Colombia with the kids on vacation or for holiday's. I would like to know if anyone has used this form before. How long in advance from travel should it be submitted? does it save headaches during travel? Does it matter if she is in the 2 year conditional period or afterwards in the Permanant Resident status too?

Also, for minors, is it all that difficult to get the authorization to take minors out of Colombia? My girlfriend has a daughter and is expecting another. I just want to see if there was any other precautions that should be consided while traveling frequently.

For the other forms... I know the initial form I-130 is required for each person that is traveling to the US. Is the other requirements strictly enforced for children, such as the biographical info, photos, or anything else for the other primary documents?

I know the main thing I should be thinking about is getting the papers for the marriage but I'm also thinking of everything else that comes afterwards. Right now, I'm still waiting for my Birth Certificate from Washington DC after a month. I just hope I get it in time for the translations and legalizing before my trip in two weeks. Right now, I'm just praying everything works out.

She will have to have a notarized document authorizing her to remove the children from Colombia. My wife had to have such a document signed by her even though she was the one taking the kids out of Colombia. we also had to have a notarized copy of their father's death certificate. Also, is your wife getting a K-3? If so, the kids get K-4 visas which are derivatives of her K-3.

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

I know about the letter for the Children. I suppose that she would be getting a K3, right now, I'm still waiting for my birth certificate. I travel in a couple of weeks whether I have it or not due to work. Although I seem to grasp all that I need to do I just keep looking at everything over and over again just to make sure I'm not missing anything. But right now, The first thing I'm focusing on is getting the marriage done when ever possible.

God Bless America!

I-131 Dan:

The short answer is that your wife will probably never need an I-131, so just don't worry about it.

The I-131 Travel Document form is used by people who are in the US and have a pending green card application (or some other type of application, see the link below) and who want to travel abroad and then come back. I did use it myself before I got my GC.

Once your wife has a green card, whether conditional or not, she will not need an I-131 approval to (re)enter the US. The green card itself is all she will need (and a passport of course).
