Transporting my Dog to Colombia

My husband and I are moving to Colombia soon and want to know the procedures for transporting our dog. We a small dachshund and when I took a domestic flight with him, I had to only get a rabies certificate. He was small enough to fit under the seat, so it was all pretty simple. I hear there are more documents required and possible quarantine. It would be dreadful if he had to stay locked out with other dogs and strangers before taking home with us.

I don't think it will get quarantined in Colombia, but if you ever return to the US or EU they will put it in quarantine for six months.
You need to get it a passport and in order to do that, you need to fulfill several requirements: Microchipping, rabies vaccination, blood testing, treatment against fleas and tapeworms.... Just google pet-passport and you will find all the requirements.

jessd...it's a piece of cake. have a current vet report, a current rabies certificate, buy your ticket and take your ride. all my dogs have been big--great big--serious dogs that did dog work like guarding our property and obviously wouldn't fit benieth the seat...they had to ride in dog baggage ????. you might also call avianca just to get a current up date, but all the times our animals have gone back and forth with us, that was what was required.

COPA/AVIANCA For international routes, you must have your own kennel. They will rent you one for a small dog carried inside the passenger area for about $35 USD. COPA is about the same but charge 50 USD for the small carrier. Copa requiremnts: Kennels for pets traveling as checked baggage or aboard the passengers cabin as carry on luggage must be in accordance with the following parameters:

Must be built out of wood, metal or plastic.
Pet must be able to stand up, turn around and lay down in a natural position inside the kennel.
Must be sufficiently resistant as to prevent pet from escaping during handling and transportation.
Doors must have a lock system that allows opening them without using any kind of specialized tool.
Must have slots that allow air to circulate freely.
Must have a storing system for waste that pet may produce during flight. Shredded paper or a special tray placed on kennel’s floor is suggested.

Kennels accepted onboard passengers cabin as carry on luggage must easily fit underneath a seat. Required dimensions:

14 inches x 22 inches x 09 inches
(Width x Length x Height)

Only one kennel per checked passenger is allowed.
Pet must be odorless, show no sings of aggressive behavior and should not need constant assistance during the entire flight.
Passengers may feed their pet as long as pet remains contained in kennel.
Kennel must be clean, ventilated, waterproof, and must prevent any pet’s body-part from sticking out.
Kennel must be placed underneath the seat in front of pet’s owner, and pet must remain inside kennel during the entire flight.
Seats on first row, those in front of a wall partition or those in the emergency-window area, will not be assigned to passengers traveling with pets.
The maximum number of pet kennels allowed in the same flight is restricted:

IF you call your carrier it will answer all your questions. To many variables to give specific answers. We have used COPA and have their info sheet.

the rules have changed....as i stated all our dogs are real big. and we brought in one bull mastiff and one rottweiller. so, things have changed. also my daughters pet a schnauzer. needless to say, the kennels are very large and it cost us $125.00 per dog, per flight.
