Kernow A moped (little mini motorcycle) is "motoneta".

A scooter (the ones kids ride, no engine, push yourself with one leg) is "patineta".

Of course if you are referring to the ones you rent in San Andres, in this case I think scooters and mopeds are both called "motoneta".

Not the ones that kids ride, the adult ones like a Vespa. My wife just calls them Vespas. Is it something like escutar?

The moped isn't one of those tiny little motos, it is the thing that you have to pedal to get it going, but has a crappy little motor to scoot you along at a brisk 30 mph if you're lucky..

I have heard people referring to both as motonetas.

But Webmanco is the mottoman, he will have a better idea than me. I'm a chick, I don't know a lot about things with engines. I ruined a moped in Cancun, don't know what I did to it, but it didn't work when I returned it.

Maybe they add the spanish equivilent of big, new, expensive etc. when describing.

Anyone care to guess the driveout price and insurance for this MOTO NUEVO?

Motos is the common name Poco those Yamahas would go for say $4.500.000 for the T110E and the T-110ED about $5.100.000. Insurance is very expensive unless it is brand new. No idea how much. Mrs. Gator's nickname for the bikes has something to do with "lose a leg."I will ask for the translation when she returns.

Gator in Alkosto Villavicencio they were selling for 4.500.000cop, it was a Suzuki 115 4Stroke, I saw it because my daughter's friend had one for her 15th Birthday, and the girl used to called it Moto, it was similar to the ones in Poco's pictures.

When I was a tennager there were some similar ones, but smaller and a bit noisy, we called it Pasolas.
Maybe your wife will remember that name too kernow

Wow Kat "in Alkosto Villavicencio they were selling for 4.500.000cop, it was a Suzuki 115 4Stroke.." - Kat1

You actually know the models and numbers of these things Kat? Wow, you are my hero girl! First time in my life I rode one of these thingies was in Cancun, I rented one. I had no idea how to ride one, but I am good on a bike, so I figured what the heck. I rode it wearing platform sandals, at first I couldn't brake, then I learned how to use the platform of my sandals to lose momentum. I ran over a girl's foot, fell on my face once (thank God for the helmet), almost killed a Mexican cop (maybe not a bad thing for Mexican society) and when I returned it I had jammed the ignition. I also felt a lot shorter when I got off, but that is because I wore out the sole of the sandals trying to slow down.

Maybe next time I will just settle for the seadoo.

No Scooters are called motonetas. Motos or motocicletas are motorcycles.

some people might mistakenly call scooters motos, but they are Motonetas. What beggars say to you is "una monedita", or una moneda.

WoW - A cigar to Gator, Colombiche & kat1

Pretty close,, I just asked for the price (Jan. 2006), didn't negotiate. !!

Price also shows Registration and One Years Insurance,, liability only, getting "theft" is,,, well,,, impossible. I can't understand why.

PS: I can't remember seeing a moto with peddles,, gezzz,, the Colombians have pride.

Hi Kat1, my wife hasn't heard the term pasolas, she calls them motonetas.

Anyway thanks to all for your help. I never thought such a mundane post would garner such a lively little conversation.

Hi Kat1, yes I saw that. You can also GOOGLE "motonetas en Colombia" for example and turn up a few hits. Perhaps it is the coast vs inland? Probably on San Andres they use sooter and moped.

I did learn that Lambretta had a factory in Colombia at one time.

Either one For me a moped is "a motico" a scooter is a scooter and a motorcicle is "a motocicleta y/o moto" Either way make sure to wear your hemlet and don´t be showing your assets. "Motos" In Colombia The common word is MOTO.I never hear motorcycle.Confuses them if I speak of the motor in my car.
You can buy a new AKT,Chineese 125 cc little motorcycle,actually 95% of them 125 c or less,for 2,950,000 pesos,about $1100 right now.A 125 cc honda can run 5,000,000 -6,000,000 pesos.
The scooter type motos more money,I guess more flexible.A 115 cc AKT about 3,500,000.
They do finance them,I think the 125 AKT about 125,000 pesos a month,36 months.
I guess they think it beats riding a bus but its EXTEMELY DANGEROUS in my opinion.Cars miss them by a foot. One tap you are down,a car runs over you.I have NEVER seen an accident happen here,it looks crazy but divers are vey defensive, you have to be watching all the time.People will just change lanes no signal 10 ft in front of you.I have passed lots of accident scenes, maybe 20 times seeing a motorcycle down and a person with a blanket over their head,DEAD I presume.
