Transferring money to Colombian Bank Accounts

Hi All,

Was just wondering if this method of getting money to Colombia is a good one?

1. Any issues?
2. Any banks (colombian) better than others? ie do some charge handling fees/commisions on both sides?
(I know if I do it with my online bank (HSBC) I can choose if sender pays OR receiver) But who knows with Colombian Banks?

3. Is it secure and easy?

Cheers All!

Wiring money I'd recommend Bancolombia or even better, Citibank which has surely branches in your country as well as in Colombia, that makes things a lot easier.
I think they also charge you some exchange rate fees, a wire fee and a 16% sales tax on the exchange rate fee.

Citibank you say... I tried moneygram before as it was supposed to be the "cheapest" from Australia... and it was, until it got to Colombia and they tacked on some other charges which they aren't supposed according to my bank here.. oh well...(ended up being about 10% of the amount transferred...)

Ok, so I'll give citibank a whirl this time...

So how long do you think this should take? less than 5working days?

Anyone know if Medellin has Citibank offices? I can't recall seeing any last time I was there...

Cheers everyone.

I have almost no idea of what I am talking about. But Different banks offer different plans. For instance the royal bank has a vip type plan. $30/month includes a shit load of free stuff and if you use it it is cheap.

*free foriegn atm at "Interact" and "Plus"
* 12 free money orders/yr.
* Interact Email Money transfer 2 free per month (sounds good but ...what is it??)
* 2 canadian and 1 US$(not for ATM use) account
* Premium Visa
* American Express travellers chekcs free
*saftey deposit box etc.

Taking travellers checks or money orders as a backup to a f'ed up atm card and if you don't need them take them back and put them in the same bank you got them for no charges. Or use them to buy a motocicle or what ever in medellin.

With the no fee ATM you can take out small amounts on a regular basis so you have less cash to take care of and no fee no commision.
Sounds like a good plan on paper. If you can plan ahead does this beat the wire charges? Do they still charge sales tax?? or other commisions on the checks or money orders?

Gracios y vaya con dios or... jose cuervo. what ever works

MMmmm fees fees fees I agree with Mario...seems that fees are charged everywhere.

I'm gonna try putting Receiver pays, since they seem to pay anyways, see what they get charged... will let everyone know.
And also see how long it takes...

I see medellin has one at san diego, and one at Sucre... I guess San Diego is more accessable?

Thanks everyone, hopefully i can get charged less than 10% this time! off $1500, 150 is way too much! especially since that works out to be a fair few pesos!

suerte!

Money Gram I personally use Money Gram online transfer, the charge per transaction is $15 USD and can be picked up in Colombia at any Money Gram location (like Cambiamos, S.A.) the receiver does not get charged any fees, and the money is available no later than 30 mins. after you complete the online transaction.

good luck

Bankcharges transfering money account to account is good possible, Colombian banks are modern there should be no problem. Your bank HSBC has their
own branch in Bogota and are generally very good.

The charges can be paid by yourself, Shared or by the receiver. This system works well when sending to Colombia. The only problem is the special tax on incoming payments what the Colombian goverment is asking 4 Pesos every 1000 Pesos. You are not getting around this.

Do not send amounts higher then 3,500 USD per month, Money Laundering regulations of most Colombian bank require extra documents to be filled out by the receiver and/or receivers.

In Australia a good option to use is Travelex (www.tmtmoney.com) they have a extensive network of agents in Australia.
