Transfer cash to Colombia.

Over the past I have seen advice on specific ways to transfer funds from the US to Colombia. Usually it is to transfer larger sums of money for purchases such as homes. I am in a little different situation. I am 6 to 10 years from moving to Colombia. My wife and I will be making our 5th trip to Colombia next month. I am anticipating we will be making at least yearly trips to Colombia until I retire, hopefully a few years early. I have decided that while I am looking for a good place to retire to, it may make since to conceder transferring moneys to Colombia now and in the upcoming years.
Several options are available since I have years to transfer funds anticipating our retirement. As the rate now seems pretty conducive for transferring some funds I would like to send or take some money now.
1. Take cash from US on each trip and exchange in bank or other institution and deposit in a Colombian Bank.
2. Wire transfer funds from our in US, to (our?) bank in Colombia
3. Use ATM over time to transfer funds and deposit in Colombian Bank.
In hearing of others problems with Colombian banks, will a significant bank account be safe over a period of years and readily available to me if we wish to purchase a home in the future. Any advice and perspective from others that have gone before me would be appreciated.

Also, my wife has retained her bank account in Colombia from a business she had prior to our marriage. Is it a problem as a nonresident of Colombia to have my name added to her bank account?

Remember, bonds originating in colombia are still not investment grade, though probably will in the future.....If you are talking significant amounts of cash...wire is best, but you get hosed on the exchange rate..

let me offer that you attempt to hedge your deposits, if you are going to do this periodically, depending on the amount you are depositing, to try to get some help with the fluxuation of the currencies....
