Yeah, but these women don't necesarily want to be prostitutes, they are tricked into it. I know a girl who travelled to Spain and rescued a good friend of hers who was tricked. This has been going on for a long time. I also know a girl in Periera that almost went to Japan, although she knew what it was about.

Maybe not in costa rica or colombia, but many have been tricked into going other places. There were lots of them that they found on Roosevelt Avenue in Queens, NY. I know of someone who was in Spain. It doesn't just happen in Colombia, but other parts of SA too. The girl takes a loan that she will "work" off in the states, she thinks it is legit work, but when she gets there, they take away her passport and make her "work" off her loan. These are usually very uneducated girls who fear that they will be hurt, killed as well as someone in their family back home. Even if they can escape, they also think that since they have no papers, will be jailed.
Doesn't anyone remember that big story years ago in Jackson Heights where it was a mexican gang that had blind (or deaf?) people work selling batteries on the subway? They did the same thing to them, and those people were actually let out and came back to the house they were staying in at the end of the day. The house was packed with people.

Try looking it up. They weren't battery salesmen originally. They were promised jobs in the USA. When they got there, their passports were taken and they were threatened into working on the subways. It's been a while, maybe 10 years or so.

I just tried googling a bunch of stuff, but couldn't find anything. Any other NYers out there remember this?

Bufalo I agree with you... Hey guys, do some research about trafficking in women and then post your comments! Traffickers can be very smart so, their trafficking webs cover clubs; bars or they can even cooperate with an agency that provides great work opportunities abroad or even with marriage agencies... They cooperate from country to country so; it can be difficult to track them down. It is also common to advertise in newspapers and make it pretty lucrative for women to respond... and if you are not the lucky one and not the smartest one, you can’t see what is behind it! Poverty and lack of education makes trafficking even more easier. Yes, it is possible. They will make you work as a prostitute by all means - they threaten you using your family as a possible target if you do no obey.
Luckily, there are some programs and organizations that fight against trafficking in women... There must be something in South America where to turn to in such a case.
Just look at some sites and read stories about trafficking. Some of you would be surprised...
Personally, I feel sorry for anyone who was trafficked and forced to work as a prostitute.

Wow LDW I think you take the award for most racist clichés in one post. Free dry cleaning for your Klan Kostume for the next year is your prize!
