Damn the swine flu. In case you haven't seen it, the always relevant Google Maps:
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&t=p&msa=0&msid=1064847750....
I'm not sure how often it's updated or how worried one really needs to be, but this is pretty intense. Cases in Bogota and, I've read, Cartagena (although that hasn't made it to the map); one has to figure the first cases will be identified in Medellin within the next day or so. Lave sus manos!

august says on Apr 27, 2009, 18:33: Yeah, it doesn't seem like a good sign for Colombia that so many people in Mexico are dying from this, while there haven't been any deaths elsewhere (in wealthier countries). Yes, so not only is lower hygiene going to be a factor in lower income countries, but also like Ken's mentioning, the poorer are going to have lesser access to the right meds once they're sick. Boo to this.

ferran says on Apr 27, 2009, 19:07: If you add up how many people in the world have gotten stung by scorpions in the last week, it probably add up more than the people infected by an influenza strain, if you add up the cases world wide of swine flu it certainly would not be a pandemic, so there something else happening here, the word "pandemic" comes from the word PANIC, therefore the media most definite is panicking the masses into something, what can that be? a further blow to the world economic? an excuse to implement martial law? or to coherce the masses to get vaccinated. What ever the reasons maybe one thing is for sure it is not anymore a reahersel, the worlds governments and the military have given the green light to procceed into a new face, there is no conspiracy theory here as we can see its pretty real, just look at the facts and do your math, I recommend to watch this video on youtube before is banned, The Avian Flu Hoax, very realistic. All truth goes through three phases. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self evident. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

That's why we have have an explosive spread of the MRSA Bacteria here in the States(MRSA-hospital based strain). Not to forget, hope Colombia has a better informed Public Health system then our own US Public Health System in dealing with Swine Flu. If not, God help them,,,Don't forget, it was the US Public Health Service Heirarchy that ultimately OK'd the disasterous 1976 release of Swine Flu Vaccine when it fact some batches(vials)of it actually contained live virus product instead of inattenuated virus product. Take the precautions when in public by avoiding direct hand to hand contact with restroom doors, Grocery cart handles, ATM Pads, ect by placing a barrier(i.e. a napkin, cap ect) between your hand and the contaiminated(questionable) object. Carry a small bottle of hand santizer in your pocket and use it. They sell those little bottles for .49 in Walgreens, CVS ect so no excuse not to have a couple bottles around at all times. They are meant to wipe the handles down before you use it(the cart). Our local Channel 10 TV did a study a few weeks back on the kinds and amounts of Bacteria found on publicly used items like ATMs, Public phones, Library computer keyboards, Grocery carts--it was simply astounding the high counts of bacterial colonies found on these items people use daily. Actually its a wonder there aren't more cases of widespread sickness transmitted from these objects(fomites). Probably good against bacterial infections caused by poor personal hygiene standards, eg E Coli and other entero bacteria. Remember, viruses are not living organisms and they reproduce in vivo by effectively using the metabolic processes of live cells, including ours. They cannot reproduce outside of a host organism. They are essentially genetic information, ie DNA (or sometimes RNA) that is protected by a protein coat, to put it simply.

Alcohol simply is an Astringent (drying) agent that decreases the bacteria's ability to surive as bacteria thrives in a moist enviroment, preferably a warm one. Alcohol, being a drying agent, removes one of the legs bacteria needs to surive in and reproduce in. That's why in Hospitals, workers wipe down bed frames, overbed tables, nighstands and equipment like IV Pumps/stands with a germicidal agent and not alcohol. Where are these poor children; Africa who does little to help themselves because they either don't care, don't want to or they are truly ignorant. For example, it is a fact that in South Africa, one of the government leaders made a comment one time that if you have sex with a virgin you will be immunized against aids.
