tourist/student visa

I am a U.S. citizen traveling to Bogota. I plan on getting a 3-6 month tourist visa in the El Dorado airport, but I'd like to take Spanish classes as well. Do I need to get a student visa to enroll in Spanish classes in Colombia? Should I get it before I leave? Thanks for your insight.

Just adding to Lencol's response. When you land in Colombia, as a US passport holder, you will be issued a 60 day stamp (most likely). Some people have reported getting a 30 day stamp, and some have received a 90 day stamp. Generally, 60 days is what somebody will get. If you can speak good enough Spanish and ask for a 90 day stamp, they may go ahead and give you one. At the end of your stamp's duration, you need to go to the DAS in the nearest city to get an extension. These extensions are given in 30 day increments. The first time you go, you will be fingerprinted, have to produce copies of your passport, pay a fee to a cetain bank, have copies of the deposit slip for said bank, have passport size photos, etc. The DAS you go to will give you the list of exactly what they require. It can be slightly different depending on which DAS you go to. But, you will have to repeat the process minus the photos and prints every 30 days. And, you can do this up until the 180th day of your total stay. After that, you are illegal without a visa. The stamps are not a visa.

THE KEY BOARD GREMLIN STRIKES AGAIN!

Depends on what type of classes. If it is a formal school-type of course in a university setting you will likely need a student visa. If it is one of the small schools that are less formal you probably do not need a student visa.
